Meet Dorothy “Dot” Alford

We recently connected with Dorothy “Dot” Alford and have shared our conversation below.

Dorothy “Dot”, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I discovered my purpose through a lifelong love of nature, nurtured from an early age by my father, Rolando Enad. He taught me to slow down, observe, and appreciate the quiet beauty in the world around us. Over time, this deep connection with nature naturally evolved into a passion for photography—a medium that allows me to preserve and share the fleeting moments of peace, wonder, and resilience I find in the natural world.

Over time, photography became the language through which I express that connection. Photography became more than a creative outlet; it became a calling. Through the lens, I strive to tell the stories of landscapes, birds, and wildlife—each image a reflection of the awe and reverence I feel for the environment. Whether capturing the soft glow of a sunrise over Galveston Bay or the delicate presence of a juvenile heron, I aim to inspire others to see the beauty surrounding us and, hopefully, to cherish and protect it.

Now, through my camera and my art, I strive to capture moments that remind others—just as they remind me—how grounding and healing nature can be. That’s the heart of my purpose: to reflect the quiet power of the natural world and invite others to feel it too.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Dot Alford, and I’m a nature photographer devoted to capturing the quiet, powerful beauty of the natural world. My work is deeply inspired by the early days I spent in nature with my father, who taught me to pause, observe, and appreciate the world around me. Photography became the natural extension of that early love for nature—a way to preserve fleeting moments and share the peace, wonder, and stillness they hold.
Professionally, I focus on fine art nature photography, with an emphasis on coastal landscapes, birds, and golden-hour light. What I find most special about this work is its ability to evoke emotion and connection—to transport people into a moment of stillness or awe, and remind them of the quiet strength and beauty in the natural world.

This year has brought some exciting milestones. I was honored to receive 1st Place in Photography at the 2025 Annual Texas City Art Festival for my piece “Fire in the Sky,” a vibrant sunrise image capturing nature in one of its most breathtaking displays. I also received 2nd Place in Photography for “Pelican Perch” at the Galveston Art League’s juried show last fall. Both pieces reflect the heart of my work: intimate, reverent moments in the outdoors.

My photography is currently on display at AOP Gallery and at the Galveston Art League, both located on Post Office Street in Galveston, Texas. I’m excited to be participating in several upcoming events, including the Strawberry Festival in Pasadena, Texas in May 2025, and I plan to exhibit at ArtoberFest in Galveston this fall. These events are wonderful opportunities to connect with the community and share the stories behind the images.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities have been especially impactful in shaping my journey as a nature photographer: patience, observation, and authentic storytelling.

Patience has been essential—not just in waiting for the perfect light or a bird to appear, but in trusting the process. Nature doesn’t work on our schedule, and learning to be still and present has helped me capture some of my most meaningful images. For those starting out, I encourage embracing the slow moments. They often lead to the most powerful work.

Observation is another key skill. The more time you spend in nature, the more you begin to notice subtle changes in light, behavior, and atmosphere. That attentiveness translates directly into more compelling images. I recommend spending time outdoors without the camera first—just listening, watching, and learning the rhythm of a place.

Lastly, authentic storytelling is what gives each image heart. It’s not just about what you see, but what you feel, and what story you’re trying to share. Early in your journey, ask yourself: Why did this moment move me? Let that guide how you frame, edit, and present your work.

No matter where you are on your path, keep showing up—with curiosity, humility, and love for your craft. Growth will follow.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

One of the biggest challenges I’m currently facing is balancing the creative side of my work and the business side of being a professional artist. As much as I love being out in nature, capturing images that speak to the heart, there’s also the practical reality of managing exhibitions, marketing, website updates, sales, and event planning.

Like many artists, I’m learning that creating the work is just one part of the journey—sharing it effectively and sustainably is another. To overcome this, I’ve been investing more time in organizing my workflow, setting clear goals, and building systems that allow me to stay creatively inspired while also managing the demands of growing a professional brand.

I’ve also found great value in connecting with other artists, galleries, and local art organizations, which has helped me navigate challenges with more clarity and community support. It’s a continuous process, but I’m committed to staying true to my vision while also growing as a creative entrepreneur.
