We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DOROTHY ENRIQUEZ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DOROTHY, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Like many of us, I began working on my confident and self esteem as a child and young woman. But I wouldn’t really begin to work on getting truly comfortable in my skin until my mid 20s. And it wouldn’t be until my early 30s that I would build a deep confidence and level of self efficacy that would propel me to leave corporate America and build an award winning learning and leadership development firm. When I was going through the African American Leadership Program (AALP) in 2015…it changed my trajectory. It allowed me to explore what it would be like to give myself permission to be authentically me everywhere I go. And it’s a gift that keeps on giving and makes me feel like anything is possible if I stay out of my own way, trust the process and trust myself in the process.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the creator of the Cohort Leadership Formula and the Triple C Framework. As the founder and principal consultant of The Ellevate Collective, an award winning and premier learning and leadership development firm.
I’m a third culture kid by way of Belize, Italy, Japan and the US. By day, I help leaders optimize their influence so that they are equipped to lead from every seat they sit in. I’m known for my effective communication skills, ‘edutaining’ leadership courses and interactive cohort style experiences. A 15-year veteran of Corporate America, wielding multiple certifications and a master’s degree in Human Communication, I strive to make transformative development accessible and relatable. My written works can be found in Training Industry Magazine, Forbes, Newsweek, and The BOSS Network. And all of the rest of the time, I’m a mom, a wife, a gal pal and a world traveler who enjoys reading and practicing my French when I remember with the hopes of becoming fluent…again.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’m relentless, I love to learn and I hate to lose. For me, this means I’m committed to mastering my craft, reading everything and joining masterclasses and accelerators to keep my skills sharp and my perspectives broadened. And I think coming to the country as a teenager and being the daughter of immigrants…we have this hustle and a desire to win and make things even better for our offspring.
I think if you want to become who you were always meant to be…don’t be lackadaisical about your future…chase it at a fever pitch pace. The sooner you can get clear on what you’re good at, what the world needs and what others are willing to pay you for…opportunities will begin to knock on your door as much as your knocking on it’s door.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest obstacle is having a refined understanding of how finance, marketing and sales play together to create a successful business. Many business owners are experts at what they do and not necessarily experts at business. We want to do our craft but have to become masters of the two separate worlds. As my firm continues to grow, I am realizing from a series of mistakes that not knowing this will cost me and has. costed me up to this point. Wanting to be an expert at leadership or DEI is what got me this far…but if I want to grow and go to the next level, I am going to have to transform without a doubt. So once again I have on my learning hat to glue this learning to my skull, synthesize it and personalize it to my firm and my team as we grow, scale and transform cultures along the way.
