We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dorren Lee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dorren, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care for me is spending time alone with myself. I love spending time with myself – hearing my own thoughts, reviewing my energy and feelings. That also includes eating good food, watering my plants, and journalling. I need a good energy recharge to help me be social and motivated in my work. Being an actor and working in the film industry requires a lot out of a person, and the best way I know how to be ready is connecting with myself in solitude and taking care of my health and wellness.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an actor and filmmaker. The most exciting thing about my job is exploring the human condition. I enjoy the challenge of being in the moment when in front of the camera. My mind is constantly racing, and acting allows me to be still, be present, and be instinctual rather than mental.
I also directed, wrote, and produced my first short film called “The Park”, available now on Cineasianfilms.com. If you’ve experienced summertime sadness, have cancer or pisces placements in your chart – this short film is for you.
It was an incredible experience to bring an idea to life – to see it come into the physical when it was once only in my mind. It’s a magical thing. Everything starts with a thought, and it’s a testament to the power we have. I say this too because I didn’t go to school for acting or film.
I have a Commerce degree, largely due to my parents wanting me to have a “practical” degree. Although it wasn’t what I wanted to study, I think of it as a blessing because I became more determined than ever to pursue what actually interests me. It was a liberating moment when I decided to follow what’s in my heart. The most difficult part was going from a situation of stability to an unpredictable journey. However, this is where I’ve experienced the most growth as a person and I can’t wait to see what new heights I will achieve while being on this ride.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Be open-minded, be kind to others and yourself, and know that your path is uniquely yours.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Power of Imagination by Neville Goddard. We are creators and we have agency to create the life we want through faith. Without it, I don’t think I could have made the leap to follow my dreams.
