Meet Doug Amrhein

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Doug Amrhein. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Doug, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I’ve always said: “If you ever see me in a fight with a bear, pray for the bear!” Believing in myself and betting on myself has never been something I have struggled with, no matter the odds or challenge ahead. Whether it was getting through the dark years of the late 90’s, moving to a new state where I only knew one person (post 9/11), learning a skilled profession (which I happily still do today), or completing a marathon (October 2015), I have never lacked for attitude or effort in anything I do!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Professionally, I am always trying to evolve and keep up with a youthful and energetic team! Daily exercise is a huge help in keeping me fit and energized. A big part of my routine involves hiking, trail running, calisthenics, tempo runs, and motivational reading. As a team (at work) we routinely meet and discuss best ways to refine our brand message via a positioning statement, core customer promises, key proof points, and brand voice. We are always determining the best strategy in which to actually understand our customer. So, in a professional sense, this is what I am most excited about regarding the direction of our marketing team.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The ability to remain flexible and patient has been a big part of the journey I am on. Specifically, being patient with the process and letting things develop over time (most things take longer than we think, for them to develop and ultimately become a success). Control the controllables is something I repeat to myself daily; what can we personally control? Our attitude and our effort. Showing up every day is the absolute best way to give yourself a chance to win, as another mantra I repeat daily is: “Your best ability is your availability”

Best advice I can give someone early in their journey: Whatever distance you BELIEVE you can run is the exact distance you end up running.

What does that mean to me? DO NOT place limitations on yourself.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I am feeling overwhelmed, I personally like to get outside: a simple walk on a trail, a run, a drive to clear my head, a bike ride, listening to birds, getting present right there and then, meditation, or reading.

Oftentimes, I find taking a break (whether its 15 minutes or a few hours) gives you the clarity you seek and allows you to “reset” and get back to it (with a fresh perspective).
