Meet Douglas Moore

We recently connected with Douglas Moore and have shared our conversation below.

Douglas, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Can one say that they have truly overcome mental health issues, or are they simply finding a healthy way to cope with them? When looking at a mental health issue such as suicidal thoughts, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or any other types of mental health issues it is about the team that you build. Having a support team that is 100% by your side no matter how bad you get is key to surviving day to day with mental health. When I was at my lowest battling my PTSD, suicidal thoughts, alcoholism, and depression I looked for a way out and I wouldn’t have been here without the team I had built to help me battle. Let’s break down what a support team looks like. It has to be built of many layers of not just close family but friends, coworkers, your leadership team at work, and people that may not be blood related but are closer to you than your own family.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I run the CPL Jacob Madden Foundation which is a nonprofit that was formed in 2022. As a way to raise awareness to the ongoing Suicide problem that affects our veterans on a daily basis. We currently have a problem in our country where 22 veterans choose to end their lives everyday. Currently we do three to four events a year ranging from community nights with local professional teams to music bingo. In 2022 we launched our first line of shirts and continue to release special event lines each year.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

When thinking about qualities, skills. or areas of knowledge I would have to start with personal knowledge. When starting a journey having some knowledge of what the road is you are starting down is key. My personal knowledge of walking the road to suicide has played a huge part in bringing the foundation to where it is today. A great quality to have is to be yourself and be personable. No one wants to talk with someone that is upset or depressed all the time. When thinking of a skill to have to help build this foundation I always go building your support team. Your support team is the foundation to your growth not just as a business but as a person. Running a nonprofit or any company can be stressful. Things won’t always go as planned but with a team there to support you the stress won’t become over powering. The advice I would give someone starting out is to make sure that the support team you have in place will be there both for the good and hard times. When you feel like quitting talk with your team.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

I believe that the number one obstacle that we face as a foundation is simple and that is getting people to attend our events. As a newer foundation getting people to understand our mission is the first step into seeing attendance go up. What we are doing to overcome this obstacle is by asking the people that attend our events is what would they like to see done in the future. By doing this we are giving our followers a voice and making them feel like they are just as much about the decision making as the board members.
