Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Amber Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr. Amber, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I developed my ability to communicate effectively when I started taking communication courses in college. I’d always been fairly good at communicating with others, but studying it in college helped me understand how important it is to our lived experience. I began to take it more seriously and it has since become my life’s work to help people improve how they communicate so they can have better relationships and better lives.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My way with words and my way with people have been my superpowers for as long as I can remember. I’m grateful to have built a career around those gifts and passions. As a communication coach, I help people find words well said, for a life well lived. My clients are CEOs, executives, and leaders who are on their brink of their next level, and want to strengthen how they show up communicatively. As a keynote speaker, I work with organizations that value their people and want to prove it by having healthy communication practices. I give talks and lead sessions with teams that are focused on improving team communication on and offline, handling conflict, and communication skills for influential leaders.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three skills that have most impacted my journey as an entrepreneur have been tenacity, flexibility, and authority. I’ve learned to stay tenacious when things get uncertain. I’ve embraced how to be flexible when things don’t go as I planned or thought they would. I’ve honored my place as a voice of authority in my niche and have stayed committed to serving others with confidence. If you’re early in your journey, always remember that the route you take is exclusively yours, and no one else’s. Trust that what is for you will not miss you, and keep your eyes on your own paper! This will help you avoid the comparison trap or feeling like you’re not doing enough.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal coaching client is someone who isn’t afraid to say they don’t know how to close the gap between where they are and where they want to be. When working with someone you can trust and be vulnerable with, coaching can be a useful tool for closing that gap! With communication being my niche as an executive coach, it allows my clients to not only accomplish their goals, but also declare who they are as their journey evolves. For keynote speaking, my ideal client is an internal leader within an organization who is willing to invest in the growth and development of their people. Working with folks in the learning and development, and leadership development spaces are often a good fit for me and my work!
