Meet Dr. Brittney Sanders

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Brittney Sanders. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dr. Brittney, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I always knew I wanted to get into the healthcare field. I found my purpose in the med spa industry because I wanted to fill the void. There was a lack of representation in the industry, with representation comes trust. I wanted to create a space for women of color, to have a safe space for cosmetic procedures vs the questionable places like basements.

My work ethic comes from my mom and dad, they always taught me I had to work to get what I want and strive to get my own things. I‘ve been in nursing since I was 19, I started off as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant), then LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) then a RN (Registered Nurse). Now I’m a Board Certified Doctoral prepared Nurse Practitioner with 11 years of health care experience.

One way i operate in my purpose is by being generous. I always wanted to give back. Being a woman in the healthcare industry and having a nursing background, I became motivated to help and give back to my community. You are exposed to people from all walks of life, not everyone has a stable home, money for college or access to mentorship, so I make it a point to give back opportunities that I wasn’t necessarily granted.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three of the most important qualities and skills i’ve learned over time include: confidence and self-esteem, ability to take risks and decision-making skills.

I developed confidence and self-esteem through practice. I remember when I first started out I wasn’t as confident speaking and being in front of people but it developed over time because I became an adjunct instructor, (I have a school). I’m even more confident now due to my teaching background, investing in myself through training, mentorship, working out, and staying healthy.

I’ve developed the ability to take risks because I live by no risk, no reward. I want to say at least I tried, not that I didn’t try. I always say try to look at the good, if i do this what if this happens. Look at the possibilities putting the failures behind you, in perspective breaking the barriers of imposter syndrome.

Lastly I’ve developed my decision-making skills with experience. Trying out things, attending classes, finding out what works for other spas, investing in research, administration procedures, my education, taking training courses and understanding the root cause of things.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I overcome or avoid burnout and being overwhelmed by taking trips, going on vacations and staycations with my family and taking a break from things. Breaking up my tasks are important day by day instead of all at once and setting goals to keep track. Also, Indulging in self care. Self care means taking time for myself, solo trips, massages, facials, nails and hair appointments, drinks and dinner with friends, working out, pouring back into myself.

What keeps me resilient is the need to leave behind something for my children, being an entrepreneur, what keeps me going is financial freedom, living life on my own terms, working hard to stay on top of the latest trends, and being competitive in the industry.

Some things I like to do to overcome imposter syndrome and self doubt is listen to podcasts, and daily affirmations. I still deal with it sometimes. What helps is being self aware, engaging in mentorship programs helps because you hear and see their stories, I believe that if they can do it I can do it too. I use this in my mentorships and continue to invest in myself knowing and seeing that whatever I want to achieve is possible.

When you’re young, having an imagination, believing that dreams can come true, not focusing on the negativity, are all things that fueled my optimism. I remember hearing “We are AmeriCANS.” and that always stuck with me. Not using the word can’t and understanding problem solving, I know that it can get done one way or another, and believing in that, understanding what I can do, not so much of what i can’t do.
