We recently connected with Dr. Colecia Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Colecia, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I am Dr. Colecia Williams, a principal with 19 years of experience in Texas schools. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master’s degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership & Technology from Tarleton State University. I have worked as a classroom teacher, curriculum writer, assistant principal, principal, and principal mentor.
My parents played a significant role in shaping my purpose, instilling in me a strong foundation built on their values and beliefs.
My mother was an educator, and my father was a professional custodian with only a high school diploma. My parents were strict and believed in order. I witnessed my father work multiple jobs to support our family, and because of this, attending college was not an option for my siblings and me. Education was a top priority in our household, so much so that my mother did not allow me to bring in grades under 90%. Excellence was our family’s expectation and standard, and I understood early that education was the great “equalizer” because it could remove barriers.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Currently, I am entering my 5th year as a high school principal. Throughout my career, I discovered that I can grow adults around me into innovative leaders who could lead in any organization. In 2024, I began creating my leadership development business, Commit to Elevate. I am poised to become a leading educational consultant dedicated to empowering educators and administrators to refine their leadership skills. I have a profound understanding of educational leadership’s theoretical and practical aspects. I have expanded my leadership consulting business to focus on educational and organizational leadership.
I guide my clients through comprehensive training programs tailored to their unique needs. My approach will focus on fostering effective communication, strategic planning, and innovative problem-solving techniques.
By leveraging my extensive experience and insights, I aim to cultivate a new generation of visionary leaders equipped to navigate modern education and organizational complexities and drive meaningful change in their institutions.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I realize that three qualities are most impactful: adaptability, effective communication, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Adaptability: The ability to adjust to new situations and embrace change. The educational landscape is constantly evolving, and being adaptable allowed me to stay relevant and responsive to new challenges and opportunities. For those early in their journey, I recommend embracing a growth mindset, staying open to new ideas, and being willing to pivot when necessary. Engaging in diverse experiences and different roles can also enhance your adaptability.
Effective Communication: Clear and effective communication was essential in building relationships, conveying ideas, and leading teams. To develop this skill, focus on active listening, clarity in your messaging, and the ability to articulate your vision and goals. Practicing public speaking, writing, and interpersonal communication can significantly enhance your ability to connect with others and lead effectively.
Commitment to Lifelong Learning: Continuously seeking knowledge and staying updated with the latest trends and research in education helped me remain at the forefront of my field. First, prioritize continuous professional development through formal education, workshops, conferences, and self-directed learning. Stay curious, ask questions, and never stop seeking ways to grow and improve. By honing these qualities and skills, you can build a strong foundation for a successful and impactful career in educational leadership.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am seeking to partner with CEOs, businesses, and organizations that aspire to elevate their current leadership abilities along with the leadership abilities of their staff members to foster a progressive, forward-thinking environment. I offer tailored leadership development programs through my business, Commit 2 Elevate to enhance strategic thinking, effective communication, and innovative problem-solving skills. By collaborating with Commit 2 Elevate, organizations can cultivate a continuous improvement and empowerment culture, ensuring their leaders are well-equipped to drive meaningful change and achieve sustained success.
