We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Danielle Vogler-Bos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Danielle below.
Hi Dr. Danielle, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi there! My name is Dr. Danielle Vogler-Bos. I am a born & raised Hoosier from a small town Indiana called Seymour—the home of John Mellencamp if you needed a fun fact. My childhood took place around farmland, and even though I was not raised on a farm, it has a special place in my heart. My great uncles were all farmers and I got a unique opportunity to show beef cattle in 4-H which I attribute to my successes in life, and even passions today. The health of our nation is strongly connected to the health of our food that we grow and raise. This has led me to advocate for reduced pesticide use and planting of wildflowers to support the bee population through a grant I won via the Hudson Community Foundation in 2016, which you can read more here. My husband and I are passionate about these practices and have brought that to what we call our “Micro Urban Farm.” We raise “pasture” raised chickens supplied with organic feed and composted scraps, one hive of honey-bees, and black soldier flies in the summer, which in their worm phase are fed to the chickens. In the summer we grow an organic garden and will expand on our wildflower garden, all cultivated on our land we have chosen to be pesticide free. Professionally, these concepts integrate beautifully into my clinical practice as a licensed naturopathic physician that specializes in both hormone optimization and gut health. The food that we eat and our environmental exposures play a tremendous role not only on hormones and the integrity of our gut and microbiome, but on our overall well being. By Design, my exclusively virtual practice, was created for those seeking natural solutions with a root cause approach for long term healing success. I enjoy working with individuals who are open to the possibility of change, willing to trust the process, and are ready to show up and put their health at the forefront. I consider my job to be the “FBI agent” in healthcare—to take the guessing game of your hands and provide direction in your health journey. My clinical expertise is in the following hormonal concerns i.e menstrual irregularities, post-pill syndrome, PCOS/Endometriosis, Perimenopause, Menopause, Preconception Counseling, Acne, Hair loss, fatigue, and adjunct thyroid support AND gut concerns i.e irritable bowel, ulcerative colitis or chron’s, bloating, gas, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea, and food sensitivities. Let’s move on with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I believe that purpose is a creative and meditative process. It is two parts— one part is sparked by little nudges that help guide us into our purpose (or purposes—I believe our purpose can be multiple or change with time) assigned to us and one part is the cultivation of it within your heart and soul—the spiritual piece of you that we often take for granted. These ideas I think ultimately contradict the way that culture has taught us to believe, which is why, one, it can be challenging to find purpose, and, two, why many find themselves dissatisfied in their life or work. Within my life, I can say that everything that has ever turned out better than I ever anticipated was the times I allowed that intuitive process to guide me, often requiring a lot of quiet thought and prayer, rather than forcing something that never felt right to begin with. You might be asking yourself, well Dr. Danielle, but HOW did you find your purpose? Right. There are 3 distinct key turning points that I feel in my heart were the guiding forces to me finding my calling in becoming a licensed Naturopathic Physician. I expand upon those key points in the about me section of my clinic webpage, but to keep you guessing —who gifted me my first medical gloves? Who in my family suffered from debilitating health conditions and what from? What amazing opportunity of a lifetime did I have in college? These were profound in my journey, and maybe by reading my story further you might be able to reflect back on your own journey to see nudges that you acted upon, or maybe even ignored. Either way, my favorite quote that I want you to take away is that “the purpose of a lifetime is being who you are” by Joseph Cambell. Take that with you because it could mean the world of difference in your life journey.
What you do, what you feel is most exciting or special about it, and expansion or launching.
January 2023 was the launch to my exclusively virtual practice, By Design Integrative Medicine & Consulting where I specialize in integrative medical care, hormone optimization, and gut health. In my practice I believe it is never too late to leverage your health and wellness. Health is one of your greatest assets. My primary goal is to help you develop the tools needed to feel empowered with your health, even long after appointments are done. The focus is built by a 3 part strategy—whole-body approach, comprehensive wellness assessment and diagnostic testing, and customized care.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience – life will have hardships, you must find your WHY to help drive determination and the strength to keep going each and every day, even if it just one baby step at a time Boundaries – people, problems, and life events will test your boundaries; you have to learn to say “no,” you have to learn to start your day for you so you can before there for yourself AND others, you have to stick to you non-negotiables, you have to stick to your morals; trust me – this is undoubtedly one of those hardest I come across in my own journey.
Gratitude – the vibes you create, are the vibes you attract; learn to start and end your day with what you are grateful for
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The biggest growth has been in my own personal development. I was recently at a Rotary meeting in which a speaker asked the crowd, “why do we often not create goals and achievements for ourselves?” Answers were given. Fear. Not having a clear why, or something that would drive us to want to achieve those goals. The human tendency to stay comfortable and steer clear of change due to the possibility of pain, fear and uncomfortability. Not being taught how to clearly identify how to create goals. There was truth in all of those areas. In this past year I felt the need for an evaluation on how far I have come and where I want to go. There is pride and joy in what I have been given, the people I have met, the friends and family that are in my life, and the opportunities experienced, and I honor that process. But I also understand that there is so much potential that we have and so it was becoming increasingly clear that through that intuitive and purposeful process that I was being drawn to step out and build an exclusively virtual practice. I would be lying if I didn’t say that fear has crept in more than once. It is probably true that the #1 obstacle is our self, right? Deep down I can see even though in the inception of By Design IMC that there has been tremendous growth within me, and that is something I can be proud of.
