Meet Dr. Dave Montgomery

We recently connected with Dr. Dave Montgomery and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Dave, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

My confidence developed early in life, a combination of intentional nurturing and trial by fire. My mother instilled an “I can” attitude in me and placed me in environments where that mindset was echoed and reinforced through action. Growing up on the Southside of Chicago, necessity and some wrong turns taught me that I can do hard things. Despite some academic struggles as a kid, I was captivated by a love for biology which is a difficult subject to grasp. I stuck with it and that passion became a strong foundation, and over time, I learned that confidence comes from sticking it out no matter how hard it may seem.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I exist to teach and to heal, and I’m certain of that now. Everything I do falls perfectly into these two themes. The subject of my teaching can vary, but through the teaching comes healing. This is what sets me apart from all the other doctors on social media. My work as a preventive cardiologist and founder of PREventClinic in Sandy Springs, Georgia, allows me to proactively diagnose and treat heart and vascular disease. What excites me most is helping patients reclaim their independence and get off medication. I also use TV, radio, and social platforms to educate and inspire a broader audience, which amplifies my impact far beyond the clinic walls.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

If I had to pick three attributes to live by, they would be:

Imagination: This is more important than knowledge. Nurture your imagination because your vision comes from it. You cannot innovate or create on any scale without vision.

Persistence/Resilience: In life, as in social media, the most persistent person wins.

Faith: You must have faith that what is meant for you is for you, and that everything is working out for your highest good.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

I have so many people that have played important roles in making me who I am today. My mother, Joan Gloria Montgomery, set me on a course of excellence, tenacity and resilience from a very early age. She allowed me to explore my creativity and supported whichever direction the wind in my sail took me. My father, Earthell Montgomery, taught me entrepreneurship when I was 12. I give a tremendous credit to my teachers: 5th grade, Mr. Frank DeLisa. 7th grade Science teacher, Ms. Willis. My freshman biology teacher, Ms. Mikal McCord, had one of the biggest influences on me. Ms. Handot, my sophomore trigonometry teacher, taught me how to study and prepared me for college. My mentor and physiology instructor at Morehouse College, Dr. David B. Cooke, deserves the credit for much of what I am today as a scientist and cardiologist.
