We were lucky to catch up with Dr Denocka Wardrick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dr Denocka , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
When you think of a scientist normally the thoughts that come to mind is a white lab coat a pocket protector maybe somebody wearing glasses however that was never the case with me I was always more likely to be in a NY fitted cap, sweatpants and timberland boots for the most part. So being the only one that looks like me in these rooms my intellect was always vetted and because of those situations I was always forced to speak up and speak out and when in these type of rooms I always have the upper hand because everyone else looks the same
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a visionary in the NFC technology field I developed and create practical use for ( near field communication) NFC weather its wearable technology for the person like the SOCIAL Touch N Mint key fob, custom home applicationsOr the Techlett bracelet or for interacting with your customers in your brick and mortar business . And what truly excites me about this is it gives me and my generation a chance to shape the future.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three top qualities that served me best was and if you’re on your journey to entrepreneurship take a page out of my book it won’t be easy but it’ll be worth it 1. to be daring not being afraid to take risk 2. don’t just learn a new skill apply it for everything that I have ever learned I do my best to apply as much as I can to my everyday life and number 3 do the best you can and let it go once I know I’ve done a good job everything else is in God’s hands
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I always carry the gratitude of those who have inspired me and helped me get to where I am today there’s a few that come to mind. Earth Tones in little 5 Points Atlanta gave me the courage to challenge my technology designs and at times forcing me to think outside the box. The world famous Hypopotamus incubator on West Peachtree in Atlanta Georgia that connected me with so many startups and allow me to make new friends in the space of creation and development giving me my first laboratory to work out the algorithms and specs before it became a realityAnd the numerous of celebrities that picked up pieces of my wearable technology from Head Krack, Crystal Jordan Julius Williams from the Jacksonville jaguars and Anthony Smith from the Pittsburgh Steelers thank you for being there the first day I actually developed the first chip in 2017. I will forever be grateful , Ian Burke shawty the comedian , Roland Martin ,Aj, Mc Shan, Dame Dash
