We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Dorily Esquilin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Dorily, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
My confidence and self-esteem developed from the modeling and continuous affirmations of my parents in my upbringing. They both focused on ensuring that my siblings and I learnt self-respect, self- love, and self-acceptance, while embracing hardships and learning how to overcome them. This mindset has helped me to believe in my strengths and abilities as well as to work on my limitations, while enjoying the ride towards growth and maturity.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Dr. Dórily Esquilin and Dr. Alexander Rúa are the CEOs of DLC Consultants Inc, a nonprofit organization that focuses on educating, mentoring, and coaching married couples. Our main goal is to provide married couples and those getting married with information, tools, and resources to ensure their individual and personal stability as well as their marital and relational growth using biblical principles.
During the past few years, as speakers, we have witnessed the need and barriers couples experience while seeking to develop stable and happy marriages. This need embarked Alex and I to develop DLC Consultants Inc to provide married and pre-marital couples with a strong biblical foundation and the application of practical tools to embark on their journey to a happy relationship. Our latest accomplishment has been the publishing of our book: ¡Un día a la vez! Retoma el norte de tu matrimonio (One day at a time! Retake the north of your marriage)
We currently offer pre-marital and marriage coaching. We also conduct conferences for married couples, and those who are currently engaged to be married. We are the hosts of the Facebook program “Mentoría Matrimonial 101 con Alex y Dorily” (Marriage Mentoring 101 with Alex and Dórily) on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at 7:30 pm (EST). Alex and I consider ourselves eternal learners! We learn to serve!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that have been the most impactful in my journey have been determination, organization, and a learner mindset. Every achievement requires a dream, a plan of action and motivation. Being around the right people helps us stay focused and strong-minded, and that determination leads us to experience personal growth. Being organized leads us to gain the tools and resources necessary to achieve our goals, thus preparing and structuring all our steps and our life. Having a learner mindset keep us grounded on the reality of our circumstances and pushes us forward as we obtain clarity, become more aware of who we are, and where we ought to be. This in turn, leads us towards our life purpose. The greatest advice I can provide the reader is to stay humble through life’s journey and to learn to listen to our heart. You will never stop growing if you decide to continuously learn something new and to embrace yourself in the process.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The book which has played the most important role in my development has been the Bible. The Bible has a little of everything: love, deception, sin, grace, salvation, eternity, disgrace, honor. Imperfect men and women who found the fathers’ embrace, love, compassion, and forgiveness. Reading through the different stories of the Old Testament has captivated my attention, seeing how the most insignificant people in the eyes of society were chosen to be great examples of faith and leadership. I have no doubt that the Word of God spoken throughout the Bible has changed my life’s perspective. It has confronted me and healed my soul. It has given me hope during my sorrows, strength in my weaknesses, clarity in my despair. It has provided me with purpose and a task, to live in the image of Christ. These are some reasons why the Bible has played an important role in my development as a professional, wife, mother, and human being as a whole.
