Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Elaine Brown Spencer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dr. Elaine, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I really believe the foundation to all my efforts and achievements come from the Lord. The Lord spoke prophetically to me in 2000 about my life and impact, though it didn’t happen right away in terms of becoming an author-playwright, director producer all I do and all the resilience comes from my anchor in God.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a church girl, grown up in the church for my entire life. I developed a gift for story telling from grade 2. As someone who was immersed in the social work field, my work is a blend of spiritual-social work. Meaning, I speak of topics that are seen as taboo, hidden or tough to talk about. My first book “Private Pain In Public Pews” was a ground breaking book that was adapted into several plays. The book/play became international speaking the testaments of issues that people of faith deal with. So much work has much to do with giving a voice to the voiceless, those on the fringes of the church, those desiring to be set free. Bringing awareness to tough issues can help people to heal and help the church community to respond more positively, perhaps, to those suffering behind closed doors.
Using gospel theatre to tell these stories has been profoundly effective while providing an entertainment aspect to the cherished community of the church. It has also provided spaces for individuals who are talented in the arts to display their theatrical gifts in an environment that supports their faith.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities that have helped my journey are:
Consistency – don’t give up. Despite the ups and downs of writing books and plays, you can’t give up when you are called to do a work for the Lord.
Relevancy – understanding the times and providing a response to tough issues to bring dialogue and exposure.
Faith – A life sold out to living for Christ.
Keep Christ at the centre of everything you do. Follow his guide, listen to his voice in your writing and producing stories that in the end, Glorify Christ.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Having supportive people on your team. No person is an island and this work takes a team effort. There are individuals that believe in the vision of Kaleo Productions and have helped it grow for over a decade. There is no way I could have gone this far without them.
I have developed more patience. I don’t get disappointed like I use to if a show doesn’t work out or an aspect of the ideas I have don’t come to fruition. I have learned to allow God to lead and not my ambitions to get things done.
