We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Elise Brisco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Elise, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose has always been to improve the quality of life of the people around me. This is why I became a Doctor of Optometry and Clinical Homeopath. I chose Optometry because vision is so important for us to work, play, study and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. I also want to help people live healthier lives by harnessing the power of their own body and immune system instead of only using pharmaceuticals. This is why I went back to school to study Homeopathic medicine.
Once I was crowned Ms. California United States in 2021 I started getting fan mail from both young and older women alike saying that they had a new lease on life after seeing me as the oldest woman crowned in a major pageant. I received notes that ladies were working out, dancing and even dating again. Younger models felt relieved that they could continue their career far beyond their 20’s.
I was still taking care of patients in my integrative multi-disciplinary practice. After I got into modeling I realized that I had an impact on changing the narrative about aging while walking the runway and in front of the camera. As a doctor I could see 20-30 patients a day, but as a model I was reaching thousands of people a day.
As a fashion model, I am continuing my work as a doctor by inspiring people to adopt healthier habits. You cannot have true beauty or happiness without health. We each have different health challenges, but many health problems can be managed, prevented and even reversed by changing the foods you eat, exercising more, and meditating. Most people do not know how to do this, which is why I post healthy living and self-care tips every day on social media and create YouTube videos several times a week.
I sold my practice recently so that I could help more people around the world with the knowledge I gained in over 30 years of private practice. I have been awarded two patents and am currently doing a capital raise with investors to bring my vision solutions to market.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the Founder of NearSight. which is a health tech and software company dedicated to providing solutions to support vision wellness and lifestyle. After 30+ years in private practice, I saw the need for affordable solutions that address the increased demand placed on our eyes by our digital culture as well as aging population.
Our patented products improve the quality of life of our users by reducing the frustration and cost of outdated solutions. Our vision wellness platform will integrate services, products and education to empower users to prevent and manage vision problems to help them work and play comfortably.
We are currently seeking investors to raise capital to go to market as well as strategic partners.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three things that are most impactful in my journey include: 1. Having a mission that I am passionate about. For me, this is wanting to improve the quality of life of my patients, friends, family and now followers and customers. Remembering my “why” gives me the conviction to carry on.
2. Resilience: Being a Founder bringing innovative products and services to market that currently do not exist is sometimes a lonely struggle. This applies to being a Classic Model. The average model is between 16-21 years old. I hope that by putting myself out on the runway and in front of the camera, I can help change the narrative about older women and help bring age diversity to fashion and media.
3. Self Care: It is important not to lose yourself during this process. If I didn’t work out almost every day, if I didn’t choose healthy foods, if I stayed up and partied instead of sleeping so that I could focus on my work, I would not be able to start a new company or walk the runway with 20 year olds!
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to build a community with people who are passionate about vision wellness. People who want to go beyond corrective lenses (glasses, contact lenses), surgery and medications. People who want to find innovative ways to improve and maintain good vision through a healthy lifestyle, self-care. People who value trusted sources and convenience in their health care.
