Meet Dr. Grant Smith

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Grant Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Grant below.

Hi Dr. Grant, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Repetition. Starting off as a new doctor was honestly a terrifying experience. I was always afraid of messing up, missing something, mis-diagnosing a patient. There is very stark difference between the education you get and then actually having to perform at that level with no one watching over your shoulder. When I began my journey as a chiropractor, I worked at a clinic where I got over 10,000 patients adjusted in less than 8 months. After that process, there fear and imposter syndrome were almost negligible. Once I left that business, I quickly found myself in a position where I was working on professional athletes, and flying all over the country to treat them. Which is a very high stakes environment to operate in, as they are getting paid millions to go out and perform, and I was the one they were relying on their performance for.

Without the repetition and jumping into the deep end of having to figure it out for myself, I never would have had the confidence to step into that next role. The other thing I realized at that first job was that my schooling had a done a great job in preparing me for so that I could show up as a doctor in the best way possible for my patients. Oftentimes, if the preparation is there, we are much more capable of the tasks that lie in front of us than we credit ourselves for.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a functional movement specialist, who treats the entirely of the musculoskeletal system. I work on all the soft tissues of the body, perform chiropractic adjustments to the entire skeletal system, and give patients rehab and insights into their movement patterns so that they can begin to actually take control of their own pain and the issues that they face on the journey of their health and wellness.

In my perspective, the goal of our movement and function is centered around this idea of forging durability. We are best served in the long run by continually testing ourselves and our limits – whether in our mobility, strength, endurance, cardio, sport, or whatever else it may be, finding those weak points, and then working to overcome them. I love working with golfers and active people in Colorado, as one of my focuses clinically is on performance Breathwork – which is something that we all struggle with at high altitude. I also work on players across the NFL, and love engage with people at that high level of sport. Whether or not you are such an athlete, as long as you are someone who see your health journey as your responsibility, you are someone that I love to work and engage with. Helping people get better everyday is what makes my job not feel like work.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Passion, purpose, and enthusiasm.

Anything that is worth pursuing in life requires all three of those in order for you to be successful. Without those three traits, I would not be anywhere close to the doctor and man that I am today. Life is too brief to live a single day with out those, and I would make the argument that they are some of the most important traits and mindsets for us to have as human beings. I once heard an idea, that I think comes from Tony Robbins, that has always stuck with me. He talks about how if you are simply pushing towards something, inevitably, you lose the steam to push and what you are pushing against will win. However, if you feel pulled to something, that pull provides you with endless drive, work, time, and commitment, and is one of the surest ways to succeed and win.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

They instilled a sense in me that no matter what happens, my life will work out the way that it’s supposed to. Often times, things happen to us that we lack the perspective on, or fail to see the reasoning behind. While I struggled early on in my career to find a place and a purpose, that idea was what kept me going. It kept me questioning and it kept me searching. I believe that there is still a path in front of me that I don’t know what it contains, but I operate everyday from the perspective that regardless of what happens, my life will work out in ways that I could never imagine.
