We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Jessica Tranchina a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Jessica, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic most definitely comes from my upbringing and especially my father. He is still, to this day, the hardest working person I know. He’d get up every day and ‘eat his frog’. He came to America from Italy as a teenager and had to learn how to find work to help support himself. He quickly discovered that he is extremely talented at building custom homes with creative, unique aspects and painting with precision. He built that into a company from the ground up as a new American. Seeing his discipline every day built some very positive habits in me. I would rise early and run daily, study every evening to be at the top of my class. I always sought new challenges to conquer. I didn’t grow up in a life of leisure; scrolling a phone I didn’t have, all day. I was always tackling something challenging to better myself. It also built resilience in me. I realized that if I introduced positive and difficult challenges into my life, everything else was easier. I take these habits with me today. I also think because of watching my father assimilate into a new country with such strength and resilience, it made me a much more positive and optimistic person. There is no feat that is unachievable!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My purpose and passion in life has always been to improve the health and wellness in the lives of the communities I serve. This is something I discovered about myself when I was 12 years old. When I discovered this inner fire and drive to help others, I pursued a career in Physical Therapy. I traveled to follow the best mentors to learn the best techniques to help heal the body. After having my own practice for many years, it dawned on me that I wanted to help more people! That is when the vision of Generator came into my mind. How amazing would it be to have a facility that empowered people and taught them how to help themselves through the use of our science backed wellness protocols that I designed with my husband and co-founder, Delfin Ward, also a therapist. We have been open for 5 years at Seaholm and have positively impacted the lives of thousands of people. What an amazing feeling to have a business that improves the lives in your community. We could not ask for a more rewarding business. Our protocols are designed to decrease pain and inflammation, boost mood and decrease anxiety, improve performance, help with sleep and overall wellbeing. Our recovery protocol begins with use of infrared sauna, followed by contrasting between hot and cold plunge pools and finishes with lymphatic massage Normatec devices and whole body vibration. We also have therapeutic massage and semi private personal training sessions. We are expanding into our second location in Austin this year!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
This is a really great question because I personally believe anyone can do anything that they want to do in life. I do believe with optimism, persistence, and grace and kindness you can achieve anything that you vision. It can be very difficult to stay optimistic when doubt and fear creep into your mind, but the trick is to recognize it, acknowledge and thank your mind for looking out for you, then immediately say 3 things you are grateful for to help shift your mind back into an optimistic state. Persistence is having a never give up attitude! Keep trying. Keep asking. Ask someone else. Never, and I mean never, give up! But I believe the most important one is to always treat people how you want to be treated-with kindness, respect and grace. Our core values at Generator is the acronym CARERS: we are compassionate, advocates, respectful, experts, resilient and deliver the best service. We don’t believe you get what you want being rude or disrespectful to people. We get what we want and where we want to be while treating others with kindness.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
When we first opened Generator Athlete Lab we thought our avatar would be athletes! We quickly found out that, although we do see athletes, we also see such a wide range of people! We see people as young as 11 all the way up to folks in their 70s. Anyone looking to feel better-feel their very best version of themselves-seek us out. Whether they are looking to flush their lymphatic system, feel happier and get a boost of endorphins, decrease pain and inflammation, have improvement in focus and drive, sleep better, have improvement in performance, or desire a longer and healthier life, they seek us out for our science backed wellness protocols. It is really cool to see the variety and types of people we serve. Although they all may be different, they do possess a common trait of having the desire to be the best and healthiest version of themselves. If they don’t come in with the ability to make it the entire session in our cold tub, they eventually build the grit and determination to do so, and find that they carry that resilience with them to other difficult challenges in their daily lives.
