Alright – so today, we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Joya Lyons. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation we’ve shared it below.
Dr. Joya, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose, and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe that every single one of us has a purpose in life—something that we are uniquely gifted to do. When that same purpose can translate into helping or impacting the lives of others, it means that it’s God ordained. For me, finding my purpose was a journey of self-discovery that involved looking back on my past and thinking about what made me truly happy.
As a child, I was always passionate about building things and working with my hands. These passions not only intensified when I had my own family but also led me to become an award-winning cosmetic dentist and inventor of The Enchanted Tooth Box®, an imagination-driven children’s product that helps all families create magical memories together. This innovative family-friendly tool takes the stress out of the Tooth Fairy tradition for parents and adds an even more magical element for their little ones. I feel incredibly blessed to have found my purpose in life, and I hope everyone who’s reading this finds theirs, too.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m whole-heartedly devoted to creating unforgettable memories with my children as I rise to the top of my profession as a cosmetic dentist. That’s why my husband and I founded Enchanted Traditions™ in February 2020. My inspiration came in 2019 when I struggled to balance family activities with my demanding work schedule.
Playing the Tooth Fairy, with limited time, is a shared pressure and anxiety felt amongst working parents who want to keep family traditions alive. With Enchanted Traditions™, I aim to help families strengthen their bonds and keep traditions alive by offering unique and magical products and experiences that bring families together.
The first product I invented is The Enchanted Tooth Box®, a game-changer for busy parents! This keepsake box makes the Tooth Fairy tradition fun and hassle-free, automating it for maximum convenience.
The time-activated box also comes with a charming children’s book I authored, making it an excellent tool for teaching important oral hygiene habits that prevent cavities. This is just the beginning of my magical journey, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back at my journey of creating Enchanted Traditions™, I can confidently say that three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge were most impactful: passion, perseverance, and creativity.
Firstly, passion was the driving force behind Enchanted Traditions™. As mentioned before, my little ones are the driving force behind this brand. I’m committed to creating unforgettable memories with them, and I want the same for other families. This motivated me to develop innovative products and services to help busy parents juggle their work and responsibilities while keeping family traditions alive. I advise folks early in their journey to find their passion and pursue it relentlessly. Passion is contagious, inspiring others to support and believe in their mission.
Secondly, perseverance is key to success in any entrepreneurial journey. There were times when I felt discouraged and overwhelmed, especially when faced with the complex task of inventing a new product and figuring out how to market them. However, I pressed on and never gave up on my dream. If you’re in your discovery phase, develop a growth mindset and be willing to learn from failures and mistakes. Perseverance is the only way to turn setbacks into opportunities.
Thirdly, creativity is essential to innovation. As a cosmetic dentist, I always look for new ways to make my patients smile and feel confident. This creative mindset led me to invent The Enchanted Tooth Box®. Being creative means thinking outside the box, experimenting with new ideas, and taking risks. Don’t be afraid to think big, collaborate with others, and explore new possibilities.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
As a self-funded business owner and a newcomer to running a product-based business, the lack of access to funding options is daunting. I’m also learning that running a product-based business versus offering a service comes with a huge price tag, especially regarding distribution. With limited resources, investing in key business areas, such as product development, marketing, and hiring, can be quite a challenge.
However, I refuse to let any of this hold me back. Instead, I’ve been actively researching and pursuing alternative funding options. One solution I have found is applying for grants, networking with other entrepreneurs and industry experts in my community, and continuously seeking advice and guidance on overcoming this obstacle. I’ve found that the support and mentorship from other like-minded individuals have been instrumental, providing me with practical insights and strategies for overcoming this particular challenge.
Also, I’m using the power of social media to increase my company’s visibility. If you check our Instagram: @EnchantedTraditions, we have a decent following, which grows daily. We’re committed to creating content that shows the world how two working parents are able to give their children a healthy and full childhood experience.
