Meet Dr. Marcia Martin

We recently connected with Dr. Marcia Martin and have shared our conversation below.

Dr. Marcia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

Pain was the primary motivating force for finding my way to my purpose and peace.

Low self-esteem made me reluctant to believe in myself, take responsibility for where I was, or believe that I could be anyone or anywhere else. Seeing myself as I was not, stuffed me into a box labeled doubt, shame, fear, and guilt. I doubted I could make a difference so I had to try harder while expecting less. I was ashamed that I couldn’t offer more so I had to over-give and take less. I was afraid I could never become valuable so I had to be more but see myself as less. I was suffocated by guilt so I had to complain less, produce more, and give others the credit because they were worthy and I was a failure.

I was a great cheerleader for others and a horrible critic of myself and my contributions. I saw myself as never enough while I assured all others they were more than enough. It was a painful and destructive way of life but it was the catalyst that finally forced me to break through so I could break free.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As my life began to transform and unfold in new and glorious ways., I wanted to see if I could share this work with others and give them what I had been given. I spent the next year teaching others what I had learned and giving away heart healing, transformation sessions. Through this journey, I discovered that healing your heart from all past pain will positively affect every aspect of your life.

Today, I’m honored to share that we’ve become a nonprofit, The Heart Healing Foundation is able to help all those who come to us with no barrier to entry. As a Foundation our primary focus is to support those who have become victims of abuse and trauma. We help them rise from victim to victorious by healing their hearts so their lives will be transformed.

Heart Healing addresses the deepest part of our being, the subconscious. It focuses on discovering the creation point of limiting beliefs and destructive patterns so they can be released. Once they’re released anything tied to them such as guilt, shame, blame, fear, and doubt fades away since they no longer have an anchor point. As Carl Jung said, “Until you make the subconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

By working in the heart, we change the belief system from limited to unlimited, this changes how we feel about ourselves, which changes what we believe we’re capable of. Our thoughts begin to reflect this new belief, our actions improve and we come into alignment with our highest good.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

A deep sense of curiosity about why things work, why people behave or react in the way they do and how the same factors can create a different experience in different people helped me to continue researching and studying. What was the common denominator, what was different, what made some people succeed while others failed? Is there a Creator and if so, is that being benevolent or a despot?

As a teacher and avid reader, I enjoyed the process of discovery. I needed to know why and then how. I wanted what those authors had but I didn’t know how to get it. At first, I thought I would be satisfied with a better income, I believed more money would make my dissatisfaction with life go away, then I realized the problem was more profound so change would have to happen on a deeper level.

My sensitivity to and ability to connect with all life helped me to open to Universal guidance. It was this assistance that guided me to the information I needed and helped me to create the tools and techniques we use in heart healing.

If you are new to the spiritual path, please don’t try to navigate it without help. There is so much joy to be found but there’s also a lot to learn. You may not be able to see your own limiting beliefs, worth, or potential but a trained professional can help you see all that you are and help you chart a course to get there.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

I used to believe that it was important to strengthen weaknesses. After all, your strengths are already strong but those other areas sure could use some improvement.

To that end, I focused solely on what was wrong, what I could do to improve, and all of the ways in which I was falling short. Since your focus determines your experiences I was rewarded with constant reminders of how I wasn’t good enough. I never celebrated my wins, never thought I’d done enough, and never took a break from the daily grind. I became depressed, despondent, and felt worthless. My life was a series of unhappy moments.

Through my spiritual practice, I discovered the harm I was doing to myself and set out on a challenge. I was to only look at what was right, what felt good, and what brought me joy for two weeks. After two weeks, if I still wanted to concentrate on what was wrong, I was free to do so. I remember beginning that challenge with a sick stomach and the belief that my life would fall apart. I was certain that this experiment would be a failure and I would have to work double time to correct everything that went wrong while I wasn’t paying attention. After three days, I noticed a difference. The world looked brighter, the flowers were more vibrant, the birds’ song was sweeter and I felt lighter. After a week I could breathe more easily, I wasn’t anticipating the worst and I began to see my worth. Before the two weeks were up, I was committed to seeing the positive and immersing myself in what was right. I paid attention to my strengths and chose to build upon them, I aligned with what I did well and asked others to do what they did well, I felt better about myself and became an example for others. I was set free from the stranglehold of negativity and transformation began to happen more quickly.

Today, I try everything. Some things I can do very well, others I can’t. I get as much knowledge as I can so I know how to ask for help but I’ve stopped trying to be and do it all. Now, I allow myself to be me. I am powerful in my area of expertise and have aligned with others who are powerful in theirs. Rather than trying to be everything to everyone, I have allowed myself to become the greatest support for those in need.

As for those other skills that needed improvement, they either leveled up as I became more proficient and self-honoring or I was able to admit that I needed help not condemnation. It’s okay not to know everything, it’s a death sentence to be afraid to ask for help.
