We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Monvelea Makor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Monvelea below.
Hi Dr. Monvelea , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from a multitude of life experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. As a first-generation American, I’ve witnessed my parents’ unwavering dedication to providing a better life for our family, and their motivation has been a constant source of inspiration for me. Growing up in less fortunate circumstances taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and adaptability. Additionally, overcoming physical challenges, such as recovering from knee surgery, has shown me that I’m capable of pushing through adversity. Perhaps most notably, completing my final year of optometry school while pregnant required an immense amount of resilience, but it also taught me the importance of prioritizing my goals and well-being. Through these experiences, I’ve developed a strong foundation of resilience that continues to propel me forward, both personally and professionally.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As an optometrist serving the San Diego community, I’m passionate about providing comprehensive eye care that goes beyond just correcting vision. To me, optometry is not just about prescribing glasses or contacts – it’s about being the gatekeeper to overall health.
I find it exciting that optometrists are often the first point of contact for detecting systemic health issues, such as diabetes, hypertension, or even neurological conditions. Our eyes offer a unique window into our overall well-being, and I feel privileged to play a role in helping patients maintain their health and prevent potential issues.
What sets my practice apart is our commitment to personalized care, cutting-edge technology, and community involvement. We strive to create a welcoming and educational environment where patients feel empowered to take charge of their eye health.
I’d love for readers to know that our practice is dedicated to providing exceptional care that addresses the unique needs and concerns of each individual. Whether you’re due for a routine exam or have specific eye health concerns, we’re here to listen, educate, and provide tailored solutions to help you achieve optimal vision and overall well-being.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have four qualities 🙂
Reflecting on my journey, I attribute my success to four pivotal qualities: discipline, support, passion, and perseverance. Discipline has been instrumental in maintaining my focus and motivation, even when faced with obstacles. Surrounding myself with a strong support network has provided invaluable encouragement, guidance, and accountability. Passion has fueled my drive, enabling me to stay committed to my goals and pursue my dreams with relentless enthusiasm. Lastly, perseverance has allowed me to push through challenges and stay resilient in the face of adversity. I firmly believe that having a good support group, staying passionate about your pursuits, cultivating discipline, and persevering through obstacles will help you navigate challenges and stay on track.
For those just starting out, my advice would be to prioritize building a robust support network – this could include mentors, peers, family, or friends. Surround yourself with people who uplift and motivate you. Additionally, identify your passions and pursue them relentlessly. Discipline can be developed over time by setting clear goals, establishing routines, and celebrating small victories. Perseverance is built by pushing through challenges and learning from failures. By focusing on these four areas, you’ll be well-equipped to overcome obstacles and achieve your aspirations.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has had a profound impact on my personal and professional development is “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy. This timeless classic has been a constant source of inspiration and guidance, helping me navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and confidence. The book’s core message – that our subconscious mind has the power to shape our reality – has been particularly impactful. I’ve learned to harness the power of positive thinking, visualization, and affirmations to overcome self-doubt, build resilience, and achieve my goals. Murphy’s wisdom has been a steady reminder that my thoughts and beliefs have the power to shape my destiny, and this realization has been truly empowering.
