Meet Dr. Samantha Scott, Phd

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Samantha Scott, Phd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dr. Samantha , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

This question is fascinating to me, and there isn’t possibly enough room here to “tell the whole story”. In a nut shell, I was living a life, I felt I was ‘supposed to lead’. Choosing things that felt purposeful in society, with a desire to serve. Leading me to join the military, as an MP (military police), in that to SERVE my country. Those skills were logically translated to getting a degree in Criminal Justice and going through the Police academy getting certified in law enforcement and corrections. Something here was missing. Something was holding me back after getting all of these credentials and certifications from diving into a career. I was feeling burnt out in the military as a woman in leadership trying to initiate change. In my last few years I started diving into conspiricy theories, spirituality, and intuitively knowing that things are not what they seem. I miraculously got my military commitment paused to chase money as a private security contractor in Afghanistan. Here I was diving heavily into metaphysics and all things spiritual, while carrying around guns and finishing my bachelors in criminal justice online in my free time. In diving into the metaphysical, this I knew I was being called, summoned. I just didn’t understand what that meant, and how that would look practically living it? I happened to search the internet, ” can you get a degree in metaphysics? And sure enough that led me down a no return path. That year in Afghanistan was coming to an end, so I mentally prepared myself to go back to my unit in SanDiego to fulfill the last year of my contract, which I extended before I left. Upon my return, and total shock, my contract was never ‘paused’ and indeed was already up, leaving me with a choice. To give them my contract paperwork and prove it was their mistake, or turn my gear in. The latter was the first step in letting spirit take the wheel. My ‘stuff’ stayed in storage, as I packed a backpack for Central America. Firs stop Belize. With a head of dreadlocks and a searching sprit, I had met 2 of my first spiritual teachers that forever changed the course of my life. Subjects of plant medicine, reincarnation and ‘past; lives, and healing let me to yet another teacher, a Mayan Shaman.
This proceeded to guide me as I traveled in Central America, Asia, and South America for the next few years, eating up anything and everything that interested me. Spending 6 mo in India (the first time) I learned about Rieki, energy work, and got certified as a yoga instructor. I started using these tools as I traveled and dove into a five year PhD program online. A non secular degree in Metaphysical Humanistic Science, with an emphasis on Spiritual Counseling & Life Coaching, certifying me as an ordained minister & hypnotherapist. Later attending massage school specializing in both Eastern and Western modalities.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I live in the depths, and I explore the liminal spaces beyond space & time & in-between realities. What I realized my purpose in the world is, is in fact, a Space Holder. I hold space for others to speak, to be heard, witnessed, guided, accepted, loved, and supported in a safe environment. I have been collecting different tools, and modalities, but all in some way shape or form hold a space for others, either individually, or as a group. When I came back to the United States to go to school for massage therapy, I was dreaming of holding a physical space that people could come and share their gifts that had to do with the Arts and Wellness. All of my interests certainly didn’t fit into one box, as many of ours don’t. I yearned for a collective space that had all different types of offerings. After I had my daughter and moved up to Ashland Wi, on the shores of Lake Superior, this dream, turned to vision, then to reality. I was hustling in a new place where I knew no one, living out in the sticks, and balancing being a first time mom. Event Horizon (EH) – The Arts & Wellness Collective, was birthed off the back of a group energy collective, that then dissipated. I continued to carry the energy forward wearing all the hats, networking and meeting other amazing woman that became pivotal rolls in the success of Event Horizon. Yes but, what is Event Horizon? We are a woman ran collective, consisting of three Women, myself Dr. Samantha Scott, Phd, Christine Kegel, & Courtney Fishback. Each of us participate and teach classes at the studio. From Art classes, public & private, to yoga, meditation. sound baths, & sacred ceremonies. Anyone in the community is allowed to participate in the space, teach a class, or facilitate a workshop. Our facilitators, and thus our offerings are ever evolving & changing. We have hosted different styles or dance, fitness, tai chi, chi gong, meditation, yoga, sound baths, art, and so much more! The community that has been built by holding a space for people to share their gifts and passions has been incredible.
Now that a space has been established for the community, more of my focus has been co-creating with Theresa Solomon & her business Sacred Soul Care. We both facilitate leading group ceremonies, which have different themes and intentions each time. We have also created a therapy room where her business, and my business, Atma Healings LLC, create ‘The Sacred Space’, where people come to receive one on one sessions. At the foundation of what I offer is Spiritual Counseling & Life Coaching. In that we may utilize different tools as different times such as yoga, meditation, Reiki/ Energy work/ chakra alighnment session, fire cupping, or sacred smoke cleansing just to name a few. I also offer Healing through Ceremonial Tattooing by Hand. No machine. Each design made in a meditative state, springing from their story, where they are in their life, creating an energetic blueprint through a design. I also make and sell my own creative creations, from jewelry, to drift wood hangings. I do what I love. I have come to realize that I am boundless.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three is my favorite number. A sacred number symbolizing creativity, communication, and optimism.
In this entrinsic meaning lies the answer.
Creativity: We all are artists in our own way. Creativity has a childlike quality. an Innocence. FLOW. Allowing ourselves to enter mental and energetic spaces where we are not THINKING, but flowing. Allowing space and time for creativity is important. Not being attached to WHAT, you are making, what it WILL be. This is is that liminal space where we RECEIVE. Receiving messages of inspiration. We don’t always realize that is what is happening, but it you learn to pay attention, you can feel it. Creativity is associated with your second Chakra, Swadhisthana in Sanskrit, which is also is connected to feeling, emotion, our sexual energy. Creativity often allows emotion, knowingly or unknowably, to be processed by the body. To move. Whether through dancing, painting, drawing, building, you name it. Creativity is boundless. I believe by continuing to follow creative sparks, helps not only to purify and cleanse this chakra, but to also get in tune with your own intuition. You guiding force. Your truth. This is pivotal in living a unique and authentic life that only YOU can bring to this world.

Communication: Communication has so many facets, that most people do not think about. When we first hear this word we usually think about how we communicate with others. While that is a VERY important form of communication, if we don’t nourish ruble and inner forms of dialogue, our outer communication with others will almost always be diminished. Inner dialogue, how do you speak to yourself? What are the belief systems about yourself that you are operating on? Do you have communication with spirit? Your intuition? With the body in what it is feeling, needing, asking? You are not your body. You are not your mind. Can we observe these aspects and learn to create healthy lines of communication? Sending and receiving. These answers don’t come overnight or by thinking about them once, the work will never be finished as we are ever growing and evolving. The key here is making a LIFE LONG commitment to reflection of our communication as a whole.

Optimism: I don’t mean to just stay positive ALL the time. I have gotten hung up here, mentally and & spiritually bypassing myself from really FEELING. We are allowed and need to feel the full spectrum of the human experience. They key here is allowing ourself to feel and process, without getting stuck there. Falling into victim mentalities. Realizing that through it all, through all what being human has to offer, life, death, joy, heartbreak, disappointment, that there is something here for us. Something to learn. To grow from. The mentality that the universe is ALWAYS conspiring in your favor, even if it doesn’t always FEEL that way.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

We live in an overwhelming world, and it can be difficult to stay calm and grounded in the midst of it. But if you have never felt grounded, how would you know the difference? The phrase, “being in the world, but not of the world” comes to mind here. I used to be on auto pilot, being of the world. It was normal to be in a constant state of overwhelm. This reflected in all areas of my life, my job, my relationships, and how I viewed myself and the world. So for me it has been learning to:
1. Recognizing overwhelm – This step is the MOST IMPORTANT. How can you DO something about overwhelm if you don’t even realize you are in it? I take a moment to check in with my body – what is it telling me? How am I acting? Do I feel aligned? If the answer is no: what do I have time and space for? Short amount of time:
2. Take a few deep cleansing breaths, inhaling through the nose deeply, and opening the mouth and sighing it out. I Incorporate this breaths every time I go to use the bathroom creating consistency throughout my day.
3. Silence – realizing I am not in a place of constructive communication, I try to keep my energy directed inwards, allowing long pauses in conversation, or simply silence when it isn’t necessary to speak. This really helps when you are in an overwhelming conversation. The tendency is to fire back with emotional responses. If we can slow this down, slow our breathing. The allow more space for the other person to communicate. We offer ourselves the chance to respond rather than react.
Longer periods of time:
4. I move my body: Dance, Yoga, walk, gym
5. Reflect: Sitting quietly, observing what feelings are there. Writing them down, sifting through the layers of emotions seeing if I can get to the next level, Can I move from anger to frustration? Can I move from frustration to annoyance? Validating each emotion as it comes, saying “and that’s ok”.
6. Laying quietly in prayer with my body. Asking spirit to assist me. To guide my hands in places my body need to feel touched, seen, and released.
