Meet Dr. Seema Desai

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Seema Desai. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Seema below.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

As a recovering perfectionist and people-pleaser, I’ve experienced a thing or two around imposter phenomenon and being a working mom. Though I looked like I had it all on the outside, I felt like I was a hot mess inside, and it was showing up in the worst ways, especially with the people I loved the most. I felt guilt for “having it all” and still feeling unfulfilled and unhappy.

I learned how to create meaningful happiness and success, and now, my passion is to help other ambitious, high-achieving leaders do the soul work to go from busy, stressed, and overwhelmed to productive, effective, deeply fulfilled and at ease in a way that’s sustainable and authentic to them..

You can find a lot of my content on how to think, do, and be the best version of yourself on social media and on my podcast, “Happy and Human.”

I offer private coaching, as well as speaking and workshops for teams and groups.

Most recently, I launched a course on how to leverage your breath to create calm in the chaos and make decisions more effectively. This online, self-paced series, “Calm in the Chaos” is designed for beginners and novices and equips them with tools and guided sessions they can use anywhere, anytime. You can learn more and get instant access  on my website.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Understanding when you’re thinking in binary/black-and-white is powerful. Simply recognizing when it’s happening and what situations trigger that type of thinking will help you realize how you can use curiosity to see other perspectives and make more empathetic, effective decisions that create winning outcomes for everyone.

2) Inner peace creates outer peace. Inner conflict creates external conflict. Choose wisely.

3) Put yourself in the room where others have already done what you’re hoping to accomplish. In the end, they will be your best support to help you get where you want to go. By that, I mean expanding your network, or hiring professionals to help where you’re falling short is a wise investment in both your time and money. For me, coaching and personal growth was an invaluable investment that has paid off in spades both monetarily and not.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Reflection at the end of the day helps me start to see patterns of when I start to get overwhelmed and what might contribute. Is it how much I ‘ve slept, or the quality of my food, or if I’ve meditated that day, or sometimes, it’s a specific challenge or situation that I experience (a deadline, my kid going through a phase, husband working more than usual, etc).

Knowing what situations I tend to get overwhelmed in and their triggers helps me take steps to mitigate the risk and anticipate how I want to respond instead of overwhelm. The most helpful and effective response I’ve found is to understand how the overwhelm shows up in my body, so I can release it through breathwork. This is impactful because I can do it anywhere–sitting in traffic, in a big meeting, or simply by myself as I work.

Learning how to decode my body’s signals when overwhelmed and using my breath to create inner peace has been life-changing, because then, I can respond from a place of ease instead of a place of stress, which leads to better outcomes for everyone.
