Discovering my purpose has been a multifaceted and deeply personal journey, woven together by a blend of personal experiences, professional growth, and an unwavering passion to create a meaningful impact in the world. It all started with my decision to become a pharmacist. I was driven by a strong commitment to provide accessible care to patients and to advocate for their well-being within the healthcare system. As my career evolved, I created a successful concierge practice, PharmaSue. Here, my focus on precision medicine aimed to optimize patient outcomes by tailoring care to individual needs. Within this venture, I championed patient education and empowerment, fostering a sense of active participation in their own well-being. The dedication I poured into my role as a pharmacist did not go unnoticed. I was honored with numerous national awards and accolades, each a testament to the significance of my contributions to patient care and advocacy. These achievements reinforced the importance of my work and my commitment to making a difference in the lives of those I served.
Amidst my professional achievements, I recognized a broader responsibility—to set an example for my five children. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. Reflecting on my journey, these qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge have stood out as most impactful:

Resilience: Throughout my career, resilience has been crucial. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to challenges, and maintain my commitment to my goals has been instrumental in navigating the complexities of the pharmacy profession. To those starting their journey, I would advise cultivating resilience by developing a growth mindset, seeking mentorship and support when needed, and viewing obstacles as opportunities for growth.

Effective Communication: Communication is at the heart of pharmacy practice. The skill to convey complex medical information to patients, collaborate with healthcare teams, and advocate for patients’ needs is paramount. I encourage those early in their journey to hone their communication skills through active listening, seeking feedback, and practicing empathy. Effective communication not only enhances patient care but also fosters professional relationships.

Continuous Learning: The pharmacy field is dynamic, with new medications, technologies, and guidelines emerging regularly. Staying updated and committed to continuous learning has been essential in my journey. I recommend aspiring pharmacists to embrace lifelong learning, engage in professional development opportunities, and stay curious about emerging trends in healthcare.
