Meet Dr. Tamara Johnson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Tamara Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Tamara , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Growing up in a single parent household and not having access to much financial freedom was one of the factors that played a major role in my then lack of confidence and self-esteem. To elaborate more, I didn’t feel pretty or like I fitted in with others growing up. I was labeled as a poor little girl with tight eyes and no hair. As I grew older, my image changed more and I developed another unpleasant characteristic which was crooked teeth. Because of having crooked teeth, I failed to smile often. Not smiling lead to another issue where I was then labeled as stuck up and people just didn’t know, I had self-esteem issues.. So over time as I became an adult, married with children and a career, my husband and I were able to remedy some of the issues that plagued my confidence and self-esteem while growing up. But on today, you can’t tell me I am any less than a beauty queen with straight teeth and the ability to have any kind of hairstyle I desire, because I am now a skilled hairstylists with nearly 30 years experience.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I would like to label myself as a industry leading curator in the hair industry. My personal motto is “Look Good Feel Better.” I strive to always make my clients feel extremely special. I not only provide great hair service to EVERY client but I intentionally make them feel special. I understand that it is important how you make a person feel. My brand is TamaraJ which is an umbrella which house many different businesses such as Pearls For The Girls which is a Chic online boutique, HOPE hair growth oil serum which is a growth. oil used for men, women, boys and girls ages 2 and up. The serum is now in 48 states and in 2 countries. The brand also house a t-shirt line called PRAY PLAN & PREPARE and a mentor program for women called Freedom Women’s Leadership Program which speaks to confidence and self esteem.

The future for the TamaraJ Brand is to expand into all 50 states and abroad. The Pearls For The Girls Boutique is getting ready for future vendor events in several states. The HOPE hair growth oil has expanded to two additional fragrances (lavender and citrus). The t-shirt brand is expanding to a baby line which will include onesie, bibs and blankets all customized by TamaraJ herself.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In my journey of becoming a successful entrepreneur, the things that helped me, I would have to say was the knowledge of prayer, the quality of perseverance and the skill of people. You have to develop and possess personal and interpersonal skills in order to effectively deal with people. In dealing with people you have to learn to preserve against rejection, being told no and someone not needing or wanting your service for whatever reason. And you certainly have to keep prayer at the forefront of all that you do.

My absolute best advice that I can give an upcoming entrepreneur on their joinery is to PRAY, PLAY and PREPARE! PRAY for the desires of your heart. PLAN according to the things you want out of life. And PREPARE so that you can always be an effective entrepreneur in whatever field of work you desire.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Who has been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges during my journey has been without a doubt my husband and my 3 kids. They are my role model. That may sound a little backwards but I look up to them to make sure I am making them proud. What I have learned, in making my kids proud encourages them to be the best adult workers that they can be within their power. My husband is a perfect role model of what a supportive husband looks like. He allows me to flourish in  every area of my life. He supports me mentally, physically, socially and emotionally. I can ALWAYS count on him to be there. And he’s not just there, he is cheering me on and encouraging be to continue to be my absolute best.

It is so important to have a support system that helps you along the way. Having the proper help, helps you to build the essential skills, qualities or knowledge to be successful but most importantly to remain successful and expand your capacity. I am so grateful!
