Meet Dr. Tamara Mitchell-Davis

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Tamara Mitchell-Davis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Tamara below.

Hi Dr. Tamara, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

Great question!

Writer’s block is something every writer faces, and I guarantee you, it’s completely normal. Over the years, I’ve discovered a few powerful strategies that have helped me and the clients I coach push through those blocks and spark their creativity.

Firstly, I embrace the power of storytelling. When you’re stuck, sometimes all you need is a shift in perspective. Instead of staring at a blank page, start telling your story out loud. Imagine you’re sharing it with a friend over coffee or focusing on how you want your reader to feel or what you want them to know once they’ve finished reading. This approach usually gives you direction, helps your thoughts flow naturally, and takes the pressure off finding the “perfect” words.

Secondly, I make it a priority to ensure my actions align with my goals and create the “space” for me to think, process, and write. This means creating a dedicated writing space, setting specific writing times, and sticking to them. Consistency builds momentum, and even on days when the words don’t flow easily, showing up and writing something – anything – keeps those creative muscles strong.

Thirdly, I leverage the power of self-reflection. Often, writer’s block stems from internal fears or doubts. I ask myself, “What am I afraid of?” or “Why does this part of my story feel challenging?” By addressing these questions, I can confront and overcome the mental barriers that hold me back.

Finally, I engage with my senses. Sometimes, a change of environment or sensory input can trigger inspiration. Whether it’s listening to music, going for a walk, or even enjoying a delicious meal and being present in the moment, these experiences can spark new ideas, perspectives, and creativity.

At TM Davis Enterprise LLC, we focus on these strategies and more to help our clients overcome their creative hurdles. Through our coaching and consulting services, we provide personalized support to aspiring authors, ensuring they not only beat writer’s block but also thrive in their writing journey. We start by building a strong foundation from the very beginning, answering the why, who, and what: Why are you sharing this message? Who is it for? What message do you want to share? We have so many stories inside us, and this little exercise can help you find direction and focus. Once the story is written and published, our efforts can now be focused on building….building community, building your platform, building connections, and creating streams of revenue.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that have been incredibly impactful: resilience, strategic storytelling, and continuous learning.

1. Resilience: This quality is about perseverance and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Every entrepreneurial journey has its ups and downs, and resilience is what keeps you moving forward even when the going gets tough. My advice for developing resilience is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. Keep a journal to document your progress, celebrate small wins, and remind yourself why you started.

2. Strategic Storytelling: Leveraging storytelling has been a game-changer for the business. It’s not just about telling a story; it’s about crafting a story that resonates with your audience and aligns with your brand. To develop this skill, focus on understanding your audience deeply. What are their pain points, dreams, and desires? Practice sharing your story in a way that connects with these elements.

3. Continuous Learning: The landscape of business and publishing is always evolving, and staying ahead requires a commitment to learning. This means being proactive about acquiring new skills and knowledge. I’ve found that investing in courses, attending seminars, reading extensively, and not allowing perfectionism to hold me hostage have been crucial for my growth. For those early in their journey, start by identifying areas where you need the most improvement. Utilize resources, and be sure to set aside dedicated time each week for learning. Make it a habit to stay curious and open to new ideas.

Resilience, strategic storytelling, and continuous learning have been foundational to my success. My suggestion would be to focus on building these qualities, embrace challenges, tell your story with purpose, and never stop learning. These practices will not only propel you forward but also help you build a lasting legacy in your book and business endeavors. Trust yourself and trust the process of what you set out and commit to do.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Feeling overwhelmed is something we all may experience at some point and time in our life, career or business endeavors. When I find myself in that state, I’ve developed a few strategies that help me regain my focus and balance.

1. Prioritize and Plan: The first step I take is to prioritize my tasks. I make a list of everything that’s on my plate and then categorize them based on urgency and importance. This helps me see what needs immediate attention and what can be scheduled for later. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps makes them less daunting and more achievable.

Also, consider this: Stop, Start, Keep. If you are feeling overwhelmed, look at your goal and what it takes to achieve that goal. Keeping the goal in mind, what do you need to stop doing because its not working for you and takes you off the path in pursuit of your goal. What do you need to start doing that will keep you progressing forward in pursuit of your goal. What do you need to keep doing because its working for you and you need to keeping doing it to hit your goal. Make a list based on those 3 areas: Stop, Start, Keep.

2. Take a Break: Sometimes, the best way to deal with overwhelm is to step away and take a break. Whether it’s a short walk, a few minutes of deep breathing, or even enjoying a cup of tea, taking time to disconnect can clear your mind and reduce stress. I often find that when I return to my tasks after a break, I have a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

3. Delegate and Ask for Help: I know asking for help or even delegating might be challenging for some people because it takes honesty and a level of vulnerability. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to do everything yourself. Delegating tasks to others can lighten your load significantly. If you’re part of a team or have support systems in place, don’t hesitate to ask for help. We encourage our clients to build a strong support network, whether it’s through our Pen to Profit: Write, Publish and Build community or our book collaborations.

4. Self-Care: Practicing self-care is essential for managing overwhelm. This includes physical activities like exercising and getting enough sleep, as well as mental and emotional care such as meditation, journaling, or spending time with loved ones. I’ve found that a balanced routine that incorporates self-care helps me stay grounded and focused. As a way to tap back into self, I will challenge myself to explore new things. For example, recently, I committed to a 30-day workout challenge where I had to work out for 30 days straight. I felt good doing it and it also proved to me that my level of commitment to self and the things I desire and deserve are within reach. We really can do anything we put our mind to.

5. Reconnect with Your Why: When you’re overwhelmed, it can be easy to lose sight of why you started in the first place. Taking a moment to reconnect with your purpose and goals can be incredibly grounding. Reflect on your mission, the people you aim to help, and the impact you want to make. This can reignite your passion and provide clarity on your next steps.

Incorporating these strategies into your routine can make a significant difference in how you handle overwhelm. Remember, it’s all about taking one step at a time and making progress over perfection. I had to learn this too!
