We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Tamika Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Tamika below.
Dr. Tamika, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered my purpose by first engaging in a personal introspection about my interests and what I believe I’m meant to do. It became clear to me that my calling is deeply rooted in my divine purpose. I was able to pinpoint my calling by setting and executing my goals. I started with both short and long-term goals, specifying their start and finish dates. I learned to modify these goals as needed. I realized that my calling and enthusiasm revolve around empowering others to reach their highest potential. Witnessing others fulfill their purpose is what drives me to pursue this as my career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I serve as a servant leader and coach to both adults and kids. In my roles as a writer, educator, religious leader, life coach, and advocate for mental health, I inspire all I encounter to gain the courage to improve themselves. Grow Up Empowerment Life Coaching LLC was established as a platform to uplift others at a level that not only aids in their personal development but also in their role as community leaders. Together with my clients, we carefully establish goals that are customized to their unique needs. I encourage my clients to reach their fullest potential by helping them realize that their desires are already within them, they just need to believe and explore their possibilities. My sessions begin with a focus on self-acceptance, as I believe that one cannot truly impact and love others without having a self-love that radiates unconditional love. My goal in life is to make a difference in the world, one individual at a time. With over 23 years of experience in education, coaching, religious leadership, and advocacy for mental health, I hold degrees from various institutions, including a Bachelor of Education with a minor in English, a Master of Education with a specialization in Teacher Leadership, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Counseling. I live by the teachings of the late and esteemed Dr. Myles Munroe, who once said, “Beloved, die empty.” I am dedicated to giving back to the earth everything that God has given me. I aim to live and operate with grace through faith, and to serve others with excellence, perseverance, and patience!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, there were three essential qualities that significantly influenced my path: resilience, determination, and commitment. Throughout my journey, I developed a growth mindset, which enhanced my resilience. I learned to flourish despite facing life’s challenges and obstacles. I persisted in my journey despite personal and health-related difficulties. My determination was a driving force that motivated me to persist until I achieved my goals. It wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it. The joy of seeing my dreams and aspirations come to life is indescribable. My dedication to my purpose and my calling was unwavering, even in the face of numerous excuses. I chose to strive for excellence rather than making excuses, which enabled me to achieve my goals . My advice for those just starting their journey is to be prepared. Establish your goals and strive to achieve them. It’s crucial to understand that you might need to adjust your goals due to life’s unpredictability. Whatever you do, never give up on your true purpose. I would encourage them to remain dedicated to themselves. It’s vital to maintain a positive perspective on who you are and where you’re headed.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The books that have played important roles in my development have been the Holy Bible and the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. The Holy Bible is where I find wisdom. I try my best to live my life on principles from the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible empowers me to be great. It helps guide my thoughts and directions daily. The Wisdom of Christ keeps me rooted and humbles me. It helps me to advance in all that I do. The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren was a book that I read multiple times while in my 20’s. It helped me with becoming purpose driven. The book taught me what purpose was and the importance of living on purpose. It helped me to focus on purpose with my family, vocation, and ministry. The 5 purposes given in The Purpose Driven Life helped me to understand God’s calling for my life. It helped me to understand that my daily worship should be incorporated in every area of my life not just in ministry.
