We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Drai$ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Drai$, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive because it’s something in me that will never die. Ever since I was a kid I always loved drawing and expressing myself through words on a piece of paper to the people I loved. I would randomly sit down some days after school and just write letters to my mom or grandmother and tell them how much I love them and how beautiful they are. And I just transitioned that talent for expressing myself with words over to my obsession with music and started creating my own. Obviously at first you start slow and have to develop your own sound and work ethic. But in the end if you really try hard enough and believe in yourself, it really is worth it. I promise you to all artists that if you really practice and put the effort into it. You really can become that artist you see in yourself and achieve things you never thought you could. It’s all about consistency and believing in the process.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a hip hop recording artist/producer. And what’s special to me about my art is that it is one hundred percent me. I don’t create my music to try to express or pretend to be anyone I’m not. I’m just a normal everyday person who has always loved music and writing words, and one day decided to take a chance and create it for myself. It definitely took time to develop but now I truly believe I own my voice and style of writing to a point where I stand out amongst most rap artists and don’t sound like anyone else. If you haven’t heard it in my first two album releases, you definitely will on the upcoming project im looking to release before the end of this year.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful skills it took was patience, consistency and work ethic. You have to be patient and believe in yourself and your vision. Contrary to what many may believe, many artists don’t receive much support from family and friends in the beginning. So it makes it hard for someone to keep that vision and belief in themselves alive while still having to work and ignore negativity coming from angles abiut your work. But if you build a consistent steady pace of work you can definitely develop yourself into an artist even better than you thought you could be. And last but not least work ethic, you truly do need to build a day to day work schedule to the point where other people may see you as obsessed. But what they don’t understand is that for creative people it takes that love and obsession for your art to develop into these great artists/musicians we all respect and who inspired us to become who we are.
