Meet Dreama (simeng) Lin

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dreama (simeng) Lin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Dreama (Simeng), appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by staying curious about everything around me. I love exploring new ideas, whether it’s diving into a subject I know nothing about or picking up a new skill just to see where it takes me. I’ve realized that the moment I stop being curious, my creativity starts to fade, so I make it a habit to keep asking questions and looking for new ways to see the world.

It’s not always about chasing big ideas—it’s often the small, unexpected things that inspire me. I try to stay open to those moments, whether it’s through learning, observing, or even just having conversations. For me, creativity is less about forcing ideas and more about letting curiosity lead me to new discoveries.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an architect and interior designer who’s passionate about creating spaces that truly make a difference in people’s lives. Growing up in Shanghai and studying in the U.S., I’ve always been fascinated by how different cultures shape the way we live and interact with our surroundings. For me, architecture isn’t just about buildings—it’s about solving real problems, like creating healthier communities, tackling urban challenges, and making sustainable choices.

What I love most about what I do is the ability to combine creativity with impact. Whether it’s rethinking how we use space, improving daily experiences, or addressing bigger societal issues, I see design as a way to bring positive change. I’m constantly exploring new ideas and ways to push boundaries while staying grounded in what people actually need.

Right now, I’m focused on growing my work to address challenges like urban living and sustainability. I want to keep finding ways to design environments that are not only beautiful but also smarter, more inclusive, and better for the planet. My goal is to create spaces that feel good, work well, and inspire others to think differently about what’s possible.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been adaptability, curiosity, and communication.
1. Adaptability – Life and work rarely go as planned, and being open to change has helped me grow. Moving to a new country, exploring different disciplines, and tackling unexpected challenges taught me to embrace uncertainty.
Advice: Be okay with not having all the answers. Try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them.
2. Curiosity – Staying curious has been a game-changer. It’s pushed me to explore beyond what’s expected, connect different ideas, and find creative solutions.
Advice: Keep asking questions and exploring, even if it’s outside your field. You never know when something random will spark a big idea.
3. Communication – Sharing ideas clearly and listening to others has made collaboration and growth possible. It’s not just about talking—it’s about connecting.
Advice: Practice explaining your ideas simply and listen with intention. Building strong relationships will take you far.

For anyone starting out, don’t feel pressured to have it all figured out. Focus on staying curious, adaptable, and open to learning—you’ll grow naturally along the way.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed, I break things into smaller steps and focus on one thing at a time. I also take a quick break—go for a walk, breathe, or write things down—to clear my head and come back calmer.

My advice: start small, don’t try to do everything at once, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
