We recently connected with Drew Kevitch Entrepreneur & Artist and have shared our conversation below.
Drew Kevitch, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
It is important to remember that no matter what you do in life, someone will always have something to say about it ; whether you’re doing something someone sees as positive or negative. After reading The Four Agreements, I really resonated with the fact that when those who only have negative things to say, it is often a problem they have with themselves which is causing them to say negative things, rather than the problem actually being me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When graduating from college in 2020, the whole world was hit with drastic changes, specially in the job market. Not only were lots of people getting let go from their jobs, but there were no job listings because a lot of companies couldn’t afford new hires. With lots of uncertainty at my forefront, I turned to the one thing that has always made me feel safe: art.
I began posting all of the paintings, crafts, etc. that kept me occupied during quarantine, and before I knew it , people were bidding, people were coming to me for custom work, and people were buying. Before my eyes, without the intention, I started my own business.
Fast forward to today, my business is the reason I have a career. Not only do I still have customers from all over the country coming to me for commissioned work, but I have also landed clients that hire me for marketing and social media.
The company that started it all is BYDREW (@byydreww: insta) which I would say is a hub for all things creative
Exclusivity is an exclusive loungewear company that is currently in the works (@shopexclusivity :insta)
The Moderne Group is a marketing firm that I Co-Founded with a friend of mine, with a list of growing clients across the East Coast.
My motto has always been that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself, and you cannot rely on other people to help you. And that is how I got to where I am today.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities I think are super important is a strong work ethic, a humble attitude and passion.
Strong Work Ethic: you have to be okay with working long hours and having countless jobs in order to make ends meet. I say all the time: I didn’t want to work a 9-5 under someone else, so now I work 24/7.
Humble Attitude: I am going to be blunt: building a business from the ground up sucks. It’s hard. It’s lonely. It’s scary. But, it is also rewarding. Remaining humble through not only your success but also your failures is key. It is all part of the process, and you have to trust it .
Passion: It will be hard to accomplish something big without being passionate about it. Being passionate about something is what makes it all worth it .
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I love to make lists. It’s something about seeing it all laid out in front of you, that makes things a little bit easier to bear. It is also EXTREMELY important to make time for yourself. Go for a walk, go to the beach, hangout with friends. Life is short, you have to make sure you enjoy it .
