We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Drew Samuelsen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Drew below.
Drew , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My grandparents on both sides of the family were Norwegian immigrants. Their determination and grit was passed to my parents and instilled in my brothers and me. From an early age we were taught that life was hard and so we would be required to respond with both toughness and integrity. Yet, there was a dignified element to this work ethic in that we were to work hard, but not let that work consume us.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an English teacher moonlighting as a writer. My second novel, Restart: Dawn of Shadows, a postapocalyptic sci-fi thriller was released just in time for Christmas. It is the second book in the Restart trilogy. I have another books set for release this Spring. Panopticon, will be the first in this dark fantasy series.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Perseverance is by far the most critical quality a person must possess if he or she is to be successful. You have to keep going, not just when it’s easy, but when life become an arduous grind!
Consistency goes hand in had with perseverance, but is slightly different in that it helps regulate your daily rhythm as you set about accomplishing your goals among mundane necessities.
Creativity is absolutely essential when developing new stories. And while it sounds rather obvious, I wonder how much time people are giving themselves to think and let their mind wander without any interruption from their phone or any screen whatsoever. AI is great, but the mind is greater. Give it time to develop a thought and see where it goes on its own.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
After I had a terrible first grade experience, my parents, both of whom had blue color jobs, somehow scraped together the money to send me to a private school from second through fourth grade where I learned to love reading and writing. That experience and their sacrifice change my life forever!
