We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Drs. Corinthian & Erica Tyson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Drs. Corinthian & Erica, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
Both come from a set of parents who we saw as givers in our childhood. Whether that generosity was in the form of time, money, a shoulder to cry on, or advise, we saw our parents sacrifice throughout our lives. Growing up in church, we were taught that if your hands are closed you can only hold on to what you have, but once those hands open, you are able to give to others with the possibility of receiving something greater. Our generosity doesn’t come from a place of expecting return, but from a position of being able to see others benefit.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Well myself (Corinthian) and my wife Erica met in chiropractic college and believe it or not we actually met in cadaver lab. I guess you can say love was in the air. . . and formaldehyde. We had never planned on working together. Dr. Erica had her specialty in perinatal chiropractic, assisting women before, during and after pregnancy as well as caring for newborns with any trauma they may had suffered during labor and delivery. I also had my little niche focusing in sports injuries until I had an epiphany. I realized just how much more passionate I was in conversation about pregnancy compared to sports after having our first born at home with no drugs or medical intervention. I slowly began becoming an advocate for women’s health and pregnancy. At Acacia Chiropractic we specialize in the health of the family as a unit with emphasis on the life giving woman and the new life she has birthed. Webster’s technique is one way we accomplish this feat which is a series of assessments, soft tissue manipulation, and adjustments that help the expecting mother’s pelvis obtain and retain proper biomechanics so that baby is in the best position in the womb and that labor and delivery is as seamless as possible.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First thing is knowing when to quit. You may have heard that winners don’t quit. I disagree because winners will quit doing something if it’s not working. So know when to change your approach on something when it’s not working. Secondly is exchanging the word “have” in your vocabulary to “get”. You don’t “have” to go to this meeting, or clean this mess, or open early, or write this paper. Change your perception by saying that you “get” to do these things. Acknowledging every task as a blessing that you get to participate in because somebody else would love to be in your shoes. Thirdly and most importantly is trusting in a higher power, in our case God. With that comes knowing that you don’t, won’t, and will never know the end result. Trust that everything will work out the way it is supposed to and that there is nothing you can do to disrupt God’s plan; we don’t have that much power.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
One of the largest challenges we face is getting the word out about what we do as a chiropractic office and explaining how we are so different from your typical chiropractor. We treat all walks of life from newborns to the elderly and so on but we have a focus and love for women’s health and the family unit. Both my wife and I are Webster Certified chiropractor’s. Webster’s technique is a series of assessments, muscle/ligament manipulations, and adjustments that assist pregnant mothers by ensuring they have a safer, smoother, and healthier labor and delivery. The other part of this challenge is getting those to understand that since we aren’t like your typical chiropractor, we don’t give you a 5 minute adjustment and send you on your merry way. We spend a great deal of time with every patient treating muscle tightness, and trigger points so that adjustments go smoother and last longer. Since we provide this service, we do not accept insurance. This typically will turn clients away but we try to get them to understand that insurance likes to dictate how physicians practice and that they won’t get this same attention to detail and one-on-one time with their doctor if they choose to go the insurance route.
