Meet Dru Davis

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dru Davis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dru, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome was by far one of the hardest things I had to learn how to deal with when first starting my creative journey. It’s easy to see what other successful creators are doing and think “I should start doing that too”.. but no! I had to learn that what I was seeing other creators do may be working for them but that doesn’t mean it was/will work for me. Throughout my time of overcoming imposter symdrome, I also learned to prioritize creating the things that I genuinely like to create. When trying to copy the same type of content seen on the TL or FYP the creative process isn’t as fun or fulfilling, and that’s because you’re not staying true to YOU.

My advice to anyone who may be going through this is to remember that your light will shine so much brighter when creating what resonates within. When falling victim to imposter syndrome- it shows SO MUCH more than you think. Always create what makes you happy, and feels genuine because authenticity will always win.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Currently, I’m working full-time as a UGC creator and digital marketing strategist! It’s completely insane to even say out loud because when I first started my journey this time last year, I never knew it would take me this far!

I’ve worked with so many amazing brands such as Viator, Nature’s Way Vitamins, Boxed Water, and even Dove! As a UGC creator, it’s essentially my job to help these brands create viral content that helps them market and promote their products in the most authentic and relatable ways. Through my journey as a UGC creator, I’ve also expanded to offering digital marketing services as well, where I’ve recently started managing the social media page of a local restaurant in my community (which, by the way, is so freaking cool because I get to try all their food and delicious drinks for FREE!)

There are so many amazing things that come with working in this avenue, it would take a whole day to touch on them all. However, if I had to name a few, it would obviously start with the amount of free products I get. It’s to the point where now, I just give stuff away to my friends and family because if not, my house would be EXTREMELY cluttered, haha, omg!

I also love the relationship aspect of my job. Before I started to work for myself, I was managing about 30 clients a month at a digital marketing agency based in Los Angeles, CA! As awesome as the role was, I felt like I was missing so much when it came to being fulfilled within. Now that I’m in a very similar space, I realize that what I was missing was the personal aspect of my relationship with my clients. At the agency, everything was run through a dashboard in our company’s portal, so I would rarely talk to the client one-on-one. As a small business owner and content creator, all of my clients I work with are solely because of the relationship I’ve built with them and continued to uphold through the work I produce. It’s such an amazing feeling to know you’ve not only created something that the client loves but that you’ve also built a true connection with them, so much so that they trust you enough to help them promote a business of their own! It’s such a great feeling!

I’ve learned so much about myself throughout this time and I love sharing my journey with others to inspire them to start theirs too. I’ve totally revamped my blog (www.justlikedru.com) where I’ll be sharing more on how to take that leap of faith and start the business of your dreams! Never would I have ever imagined being where I am today, working for myself, being the face of content marketing for a TON of well-known brands, and getting to do so while traveling the world for months at a time. It’s really a blessing and I think it’s important that I share my stories with others to help them gain the confidence they need to experience these things too!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Great question! This is something I think has played a major role in the success of my journey thus far.

The first thing I would say is to stay consistent and resilient. When starting a business of any kind, there are going to be many bumps in the road that could challenge what YOU THINK is your ability to keep going, when in reality that ability is inside you whether you realize it or not. By promising yourself that you will stay consistent no matter what, you’re going to build a natural resilience that’s going to push you past any obstacle that’s thrown your way. Always remember that nothing is perfect at first and all great things take time!

The second thing I would say is to STOP COMPARING yourself to other people. And if you’re someone who doesn’t… never start. I don’t know who it was, but they weren’t lying when they said, “comparison is the thief of joy.” When comparing yourself to the people you see online, on TV, in magazines, etc., it makes it so hard to appreciate how far you’ve come in your journey and it can also stop you from where you’re destined to go. I used to struggle with this a lot, but I would constantly remind myself that people often only share the good things that are happening… never the bad. So yes, you may see this and think how you wish it was the same for you, but truth be told, you could have something 10x better in store. You also never know the things people go through to get to where they’ve gotten, so take that energy you’re using to compare yourself to someone else and turn it into positive energy and a new outlook on your story. You and the person you’re comparing yourself to are living totally different lives, so how would the journey ever look the same?

Lastly, you have to understand that mindset is EVERYTHING. If you don’t believe that you can succeed, you won’t. Trust that you’re on the right path and everything that is for you will come to you easily—you just have to put the work in. You may hear a million “no’s,” but who’s to say that one “yes” won’t open up a door for you that none of the “no’s” ever could! Believe in yourself and you’ll achieve all of your wildest dreams.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

At the start of 2023, I read a book called “You Deserve This Sh*t” by Jordan Tarver, and it has HANDS DOWN been one of the most impactful books I’ve read in a while.

He talks about getting unstuck, finding your purpose, and how to navigate life in the best ways to help you stay motivated and on course to being the person you truly want to be. After finishing this book, I felt more than confident to start my UGC journey and to start trusting myself and not people’s opinions, which has taken me further than I could have ever known.
