Meet Durrell Hunter

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Durrell Hunter. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Durrell, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from within. My passion for creating art. I enjoy it, and appreciate how it makes me feel. To stay in that state of happiness I need an aggressive work ethic. When I think about my journey as an artist, I want my work to reflect my work ethic. So viewers can see me progress and know, this guy was serious.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Well, I’m an artist. Searching for ways to visually inform people of who I am. I’ve been creating since a child, and as an adult who’s seeking recognition in the art world, I want to inform the world of my people. I’m shinnecock Indian. I feel as an artist I must create pieces showcasing my people in today’s world.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
It’s hard to say. I’ve been drawing since a child and knew this is what I was good at. I would say always try to learn new techniques. Create any chance you get to stay inspired to keep going. You have to have a passion for creating. Fear is also ok.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
Currently I’m facing the challenge of finding my audience. I know what I’m striving for and what I want. Until then I’m dying inside doing the usual work, sleep, all over again routine. I believe in myself and just keep pushing, but boy! Lol. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thankful for what I have. But I’m not happy. I want to be happy and that’s what art does for me
