We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dyan McNeely. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dyan below.
Dyan, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
As someone who has lupus, epilepsy, and intercranial hypertension I have had my fair share of anxiety, panics, and depression. There have been days where I was at my most darkest moments and I turned to my family, friends, and love of photograph to help overcome.
Being able to go outdoors and photograph beautiful landscapes, capture the smiles of a couple during their wedding vows, the innocence of a newborn child, or the fun a family has together really helps remind me what life is about.
I truly enjoy capturing all the classic, elegant, and memorable portraits for families.
When you have anxiety like myself, it can be hard to go outside some days or out of your comfort zone and I feel photography allows a person to not only express themselves but enjoy the beauty that life has to offer.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
When it comes to McNeely Photography, we pride ourselves on providing that classic, elegant, and memorable portrait for years to come.
Our style consists of candid portraits with minimal editing as we love to capture the exactly how you and your family are in that very moment.
We also pride ourselves on giving back to our community. Since covid began back in 2020, we have starting offering families a free senior portrait season to help ensure all families can capture that monumental moment in their child’s lives.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I would say that having fun and being creative is very important as a photographer. Many view a photographer as someone who can point and click a camera but there is so much more to that.
The passion we as photographers have when creating these magical moments. Paying extra attention to every detail such as a necklace being off center, a hair tie on a person wrist, a wallet poking out of a pants pocket. We as photographers pride ourselves on ensure every little detail is perfect for your portrait.
For all the newcomers joining photography I want to remind them to never lose their passion. Always hang on to it and remember why they love it so much. Bring that passion with you always to every photoshoot.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
At this moment, I am facing the possibility of blindness. I tend to get blind spots randomly in my vision. I am working hard daily to get out their and take as many pictures I can and enjoy the scenery of the world. My family sometimes jokes at how much I take pictures but like I say, you can never have enough!
I will enjoy taking as many as I possibly can and will not allow the possibilities of blindness stop me from enjoying that perfect shot.
