We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DZ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have David with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
My hard work ethic is hereditary. I come from a long line of hard-working, successful, dedicated, and determined family members. But my passion for music in general just comes from listening and seeing the many greats do it who I looked up to as a youth like 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Too $hort to name a few with multiple albums and much success. I always just wanted to be the best at whatever I did and nothin ever came to a sleeper but a dream and I always had big dreams. Elevation requires dedication.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Focused on success, working hard , putting out lots new albums and new visuals for 2025. Also, revamping my NorthWest Whalin’ Clothing line thru a new manufacturer and continuing to be resilient, until I reach my goals and dreams.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Best advice I can give is to do you and never give up, never let someone tell you what you can or can not do , you determine your own destiny, sky’s the limit, be creative, be resilient, be realistic, set goals and go achieve them , it’s gotta be in you not on you as people like to say , the fire has to be burning within and no one can blow out your flame if your passionate about what your doing , keep grinding never let up or back down, but know when to back out of any situation that doesn’t feel right always go with your gut. Nothing comes easy you have to put the work in to be great and be successful.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
This game is like a puzzle , many people will play their role in helping piece your career together, but don’t count on anyone, but yourself . My mentor Kurupt helped me build confidence by rolling around with him every where at the beginning of my career introducing me as his lil brother from Seattle, he was a huge inspiration and that gave me a lot of motivation, my producer/engineer Vitamin D has been a huge part of my career allowing me to work non stop with him in the studio developing my skills and perfecting my craft, my camera man Landoe has delivered high quality classic visuals allowing me to show off my skills, style, and swag in front of the lens, and my artwork man has made so many classic eye popping, jaw dropping album covers, my mastering guy Justin has done great album digital mastering since day one on all my albums and nick my cd manufacturer when I was pressing up all my albums before everything went digital was professionally packaging my cds to spread to the world, those are my pieces to my puzzle the rest has been up to me to stay dedicated on my path to success, until I get the recognition I deserve. Soon I will be releasing my 50th album since my journey started in 2001.
