We were lucky to catch up with Ed Twine recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ed, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
This is such an interesting question to me because I think resilient people rarely think of themselves as resilient. They just don’t give up and figure things out. There have been MANY times in my business where I’ve thought about giving up. But ultimately, I think what keeps me in the business is the passion behind it. You have to love what you do. When I’m putting together a suit, or explaining to someone the difference between fabrics, I automatically get into it because it’s exciting to me. I love this craft. So ultimately I think loving what you do will keep you resilient through the tough times.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I think there is no feeling like having on a well fitting suit. Both the respect and positive attention you receive, especially in today’s world of fast fashion, to actually take the time to dress and pay attention to the details is so needed today. That feeling of looking your best and the confidence that gives when you walk in a room. The subtle art of using colors that match with your skin, fabrics that have character, the feel, the drape of fabric against body shapes to accentuate the frame, all these things are the art of a good suit. So many people don’t know why someone looks good in a suit, most times they have no idea about length, or color or fit, but we all have a God-given sense of beauty and know when things are balanced. I play with those subtleties with each client and really enjoy getting pieces that work so well for them personally.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think number one is knowing that you don’t know everything and you don’t need to, to start. That hesitation of thinking everything has to be perfect to start cripples a lot of people from jumping in. Deciding to start and stick with it is valuable as well. Most times there is some investment of resources to start, whether that’s money, time or both. Once you start, don’t waste it. Even if you can get the money back, you will never get the time back. So my rule is to make it count. Also, I think starting early I made a rule to have the business pay for itself, and although I did put quite a bit into setting things up, that thought process helped me to be frugal where necessary and not go down roads of extreme debt to get started. This helped me retain capital and not just splurge on everything that looked or sounded pretty. Also, talking to successful business owners is always a good idea even if they aren’t in your space. You will pick up ideas and start to think like them. That was helpful to me too.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I always answer this one with the 4-Hour work week by Tim Ferriss. It was probably one of the most impactful books in my life. It’s a little dated in terms of the application of the book being written during the dot-com era, but the messaging of thinking about time as the most valuable commodity helped me to think about efficiencies in every day life and how to accomplish more with less. I think that is one of the most impactful things you can apply to not only business, but to every aspect of life.
