We recently connected with Eddie Pierce and have shared our conversation below.
Eddie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
To say that I’ve overcome this psychological challenge would be prideful on my part and a gross misnomer. Instead, I’ll say that I actively combat it versus surrendering to the battle. First of all, my art and spirituality are inseparable. Through teaching and personal experiences, I’ve learned that all I manage to accomplish is God inspired and powered, as well as a collaboration between the Divine and me. Secondly, I am blessed to have so many supportive friends and family, including my partner of seven plus years, who consistently celebrate my accomplishments while acknowledging my efforts. Ascribing my achievements to someone outside of myself, while being encouraged to take some ownership of the same by my Divine partner, coupled with the views and reminders of my “circle,” is key to keeping the proper perspective: I’m doing a lot well, but I’m not doing it alone.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Eddie S Pierce, Founder and Publisher at Rainbow Room Publishing, LLC (RRP LLC), a hybrid of the “traditional” publishing house and a paid publishing service. RRP LLC primarily provides manuscript development, publishing, and marketing services to published and unpublished authors with price-conscious rates. Combined with the other two arms of the company, RRP LIVE (the YouTube Channel) and Kaleidoscope, (the upcoming digital art magazine), Rainbow Room Publishing, LLC, is a vehicle that provides an array of opportunities for creatives and professionals while accomplishing our four primary objectives: Promoting Literacy, Increasing HIV/AIDs Awareness & Advocacy, Advancing Human Rights and Supporting Small Businesses.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Recently, I learned that no one pushed me to write or read. I was simply a lil’ Black boy from the Westside of Chicago who loved stories in all forms. TV, cartoons, comic books, the Bible, music, etc. If the story was good, I was SOLD! From there, I was imaginative. So much so that when I didn’t like how a story ended or that it didn’t continue, I wrote what is now widely known as “fan fiction.” I wasn’t aware at the time, but I was a writer back then. Furthermore, I shared those college rule, twist-tie bound, color pencil illustrated “proto-books” with close family and friends. That, I didn’t know then, was publishing and marketing. Those two qualities, combined with my faith in the Divine to whom I credit my talent, as well as the belief of others and my own in those same gifts, are my foundation upon which the technical, practical, and creative “know-how” are all built.
All of this, however, requires discipline and determination. The “tools” are of no value to the toolman( or woman) who doesn’t use them. Finally, raw talent will only get one so far. It has to be practiced and refined. To sum up an already (potentially) excessive response, I advise your readers to 1) identify their (productive/creative) qualities, skill sets, and areas of knowledge, 2) start applying them in small ways, growing from there, and 3) repeat steps 1 and 2 over and over ad infinitum!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
The timing of this question is “divine” as I literally, recently started a list for myself as I evaluate potential partners, collaborators, and clients. So you “heard it here first” and in the raw:
Those who actively serve others (not necessarily me) in addition to their own aims.
Those who are “ready” (prepared) and not just “ready” (ambitious).
Those who will “get’er done,” whether I’m on board or not, and want their success more than I want it for them (which is a lot of “want” btw).
Those who love, attend to, and operate their business as a business and not as a hobby.
Those who practice praising and affirming others (or remain silent) rather than the discouragement and disparagement of the same.
Those willing to do their part (to the best of their current ability) in the pursuit of their own dreams and goals.
Those who read/think for themselves rather than seeking to be spoon-fed information, to which they have just as much access as I do.
Those who respect the time of others and don’t require follow-up on mutually agreed upon deadlines and action steps.
Those not adverse to “putting it in writing.”
Those who own and acknowledge their emotions but refuse to be ruled by them.
Victors. “I’ll get this done no matter what! I believe in myself!” As opposed to Victims and excessive validation seekers. “I’d do it, but no one supports or believes in me.”
Talent, ambition, connections, and a following are just the baseline.
Perhaps it’s a tall order for a lil 5’6″ Black Boy from the Westside of Chicago, but there it is… and there it will remain.
