Meet Edgewood Heavy

We recently connected with Edgewood Heavy and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Edgewood , thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
The plight of the modern musician is to learn how to do everything on your own. We write the songs, record the songs, produce them, release them, promote them, and schedule our shows all on our own. We also fund all of this using the money we make playing local shows. We keep going despite the work load because it’s what we love and we believe in the music. Burnout happens, you can’t avoid it. It’s just a matter of shifting your focus to something that is exciting to you when that happens.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Edgewood Heavy is Atlanta’s hometown hero Rock N Soul band. We’ve been performing all around Atlanta and touring the US for the last 3 years since our inception. We’ve played over 400 shows as a band in these 3 years, spanning from dive bars, apartment complexes, music venues, music festivals, cigar lounges, and even in the street. We began during the pandemic and became one of the first bands in the country to re-open live music with a weekly residency at Smith’s Olde Bar, our home establishment. Since then, our popularity has seen us open for David Ryan Harris, play with lady Nicole Wray at the One Music Festival, which attracts more than 50,000 fans every year, and perform at the Wire and Wood Fest, Stone Mountain Soul Fest, and Inman Park Fest to name just a few. We’ve also hosted our own Atlanta music festival ‘Edgewoodstock’ for two years and collaborated with local brewery “Soul Brothers” to create our own beer, ‘Edgewood Hefe.’ Most recently we’ve released our debut album ‘$ex Drugs & Rock N Soul.’

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being that our band is such a collaborative effort, many of the qualities of success that have brought us to where we are today have originated from different members of the band. As a whole, dedication to the art and to continuing to create has definitely been a leading factor that drives all of us as a unit. Respect for the great music that has come before us and the great artists that inspire us has also been instrumental. Lastly, a continual commitment to visual aesthetic, both in our band image and in our stage set up, has been important. we find that many musicians neglect their physical appearance, and the aesthetic that they create on stage at their shows. We have found that the visual part of our art is necessary to help the music truly speak to the audience.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
We can confidently say that even if we knew this decade was our last, we would spend it exactly as we already are: unapologetically pursuing our passion. The life of an artist is a difficult one, but it is also one of the most rewarding to the spirit. Every day we wake with stars in our eyes and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Sharing music and creating connection in this world is the greatest calling we’ve ever felt. It makes us feel alive and accentuates our humanity.
