We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eduardo María a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Eduardo , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
A magnificent question, something I ask myself often and always end up with the same answer: Puerto Rico. Keep in mind that my home country is one filled with many many years of history and culture. And most of those wonderful things that makes us the people that we are is the resistance that our ancestors and us day by day have had to endure because of those who seek to use us, and every time they try to do so we rise up again, with a smile on our face, with a song under our sleeves and we sing to the pain, to bid it farewell and live for the promise of another day. Grateful for the blue sky, the heat, the paradise that we were blessed enough to be born to. It is the gratefulness, the love for family, the dreams that our promises hold and the simplicity of understanding that at the end of the day as long as there is air to breathe and a good meal to eat: everything will be alright.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hola! My name is Eduardo María, I’m a singer-songwriter from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. I make Latin Pop music in Spanish and am currently based between Los Angeles and Puerto Rico. I find singing and songwriting very healing. I came to the realization recently that art to me is like a mask I get to put on in order to let my real pains, pleasures and values come to light. Although Ive had plenty of experience in different branches of the arts, like acting or painting, it is in music where I find the most connection to the soul that seeks to emerge from within. It shakes me to the very core, and to know that through that connection you can reach through time, space and embrace others, hold them and let them know that you’re there with them I think its something truly invaluable that keeps me absolutely in love with this art form. I therefore seek to heal, summon and connect with fellow humans through music. That is a huge part of the projects that I’m working on at the moment (my first album yay!) I feel so proud of it because it has been a compilation of discoveries and songs I’ve written through out the years and that are finally reaching the light of day. I write my own songs, do my own art, derive my own concepts, and recently been working with some really talented producers that help me bring the Romance, Creativeness, Suavity and Love that I long to emulate. I’d love to bring back to the fullest force the belief of how Romantic every aspect of life can be. To feel deeply with every sense, so no matter what you’re going through you can embrace the true beauty that it is to live and be loved by the wonderful world. So make that charcuterie board, get some wine, smell nice, think of that special someone and be ready to confront your truest self when you listen to my music. I’ll be waiting on the other side.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativeness, attentiveness and honesty, which transform into resilience that helps you to keep on even at the darkest of hours. My advice when speaking on the qualities that best serve each individual, is to fully immerse yourself in them until you find they no longer serve you, but again, to always, and I do mean always: “to thine own self, be true”. There is no concept in this world then that will dominate you and so you’ll be able to give what you can and you will inspire so many others for doing so. Inevitably the world becomes a better place.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Breaaaaaaaaaathe…..and release my buttocks if they’re clenched.
