We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Edward Tianze Sun a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Edward Tianze, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism in film editing comes from the magic of storytelling through visual art. Each edit can transform raw footage into something powerful and engaging. The ability to shape narratives, evoke emotions, and create connections between scenes feels incredibly rewarding. I believe that with careful cutting and thoughtful pacing, any film can reach its full potential, turning even the most challenging material into a compelling story.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We’re an independent production studio (24K Onions) focused on creating engaging mini-series that resonate with North American audiences. What’s particularly exciting about our work is the ability to merge diverse storytelling styles and genres, especially in a market that’s often saturated with familiar tropes.
Our recent successes, including a sold-out “unauthorized” DVD on Walmart’s e-commerce platform, show there’s a growing appetite for fresh narratives. We’re committed to pushing boundaries, and our goal is to introduce more mature, culturally rich content that reflects our experiences and perspectives.
Looking ahead, we’re planning to expand our offerings by exploring new genres and collaborations. We’re also actively seeking partnerships to enhance our production capabilities and reach even wider audiences. We believe that by bridging cultural divides, we can foster a greater appreciation for diverse storytelling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Understanding the nuances of different cultures has been essential in creating content that resonates with diverse audiences.
The ability to adapt and bounce back from setbacks has been crucial. The creative process can be unpredictable, and maintaining a resilient mindset allows for growth and innovation despite challenges.
Building strong relationships with collaborators has truly enriched our projects. Working with diverse talents brings fresh perspectives and enhances the overall quality of our work.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Stepping away for a short time can provide clarity. Whether it’s a quick walk, some fresh air, or a few minutes of mindfulness, giving yourself space can help reset your mind. Talking to someone—whether a friend, mentor, or colleague—can provide new perspectives and make the load feel lighter. Sharing how you feel often brings relief.
