Meet Elena Evan

We recently connected with Elena Evan and have shared our conversation below.

Elena, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I always try to explore new techniques, materials and ideas. I like to keep my drawings and always dream of my next painting. My creativity comes from the beauty present all around us, such as the beauty in people, nature and life. Simple things like a day laughing with family and friends, a day of traveling, or a day at the ocean give me a sense of belonging to nature and developing my artistic world view.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a self-taught Mixed Media Artist who moved from Athens, Greece to the very beautiful and historic city of Charleston, SC. Charleston is a very artistic city shining with Galleries, Museums and Festivals from around the world. For several years, I was in various Galleries locally and out of state. I specialize in Mixed Media, Acrylics and Ink with the implementation of gold, silver and copper leaf on canvas and wood. Additionally, I like to experiment with different materials such as metal, glass, and fabric. Some of my works may have a unique micro-sculpture technique in conjunction with mixed media and ink to create a three-dimensional appearance. I also love creating patterns that depict wildlife such as fish, birds and butterflies.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe a helpful skill for everyone is persistence, as it allows you to reach your dreams by overcoming your obstacles. We have to realize that mainly hard work is the steppingstone towards realizing our dreams.

Another important quality is having the self-confidence and strength to make your dreams come to fruition, which in turn will develop more faith in yourself as a person and an artist.

Lastly, I believe desire is the mechanism that helps the progression of both life and artistry. It is an intrinsic quality in all of us, a spark that eventually becomes a flame for our dreams.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I am overwhelmed, I go for a walk or a swim in the ocean. The smell and sounds of the ocean refill my energy. Reading a good book helps me to relax and develop my creativity. I also believe that it’s never too late for both new activities and hobbies.
