Meet Eli Emmitt

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eli Emmitt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eli below.

Eli, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Since I was very young I was surrounded by music, and because of this, music has always been a form of deep passion, joy, and therapy for me. I didn’t begin to write music until I was in my teens, but I soon realized the immense joy that comes out of creating, I never went back. Sometimes this intrinsic passion to create is enough to keep my creativity alive, but often given the pressures of the music industry, and the presence of writer’s block and fatigue I forget to tap into the deep well of joy and peace that creativity holds. Whenever I feel lost in my creativity or bogged down by the pressures of the industry, I remember why I started creating in the first place: for the love, passion, and the peace that comes from this wonderful art form.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a guitarist, and songwriter, who is passionate about creating music in the effort to bring more peace and light into this world. growing up in Colorado, I began my musical journey as a bluegrass guitar player, and later moved to focus more on jazz and r&b after College. I was raised with a mom who is a talented singer, and a Dad who was the co-founder of a successful traveling band called “Leftover Salmon”. These inspirations, along with my sister who is a brilliant songwriter, lead me to become deeply fascinated and devoted to the craft.

This passion for music inspired me to start writing songs in order to process the many wild and wonderful experiences of being human. I began to write constantly, and once I had enough pieces of music I brought them to a band to bring them to life. I soon noticed when I presented these songs to my band that they took on a whole new beautiful form. My thoughtful bandmates took the tunes and helped me grow them to a point that I had never expected.

Music is all about community, and I realized this through collaborating, and witnessing the powerful connections that reside within the music community and fanbases. My new project is built and inspired by these many incredible people and musicians, and I am excited to share this ever evolving project with the world. Our music centers around r&b with a psychedelic jam-band flair, and I am in the process of getting the word out and booking more shows in the near future!

I also recently released a Solo EP debut album ‘Energy’ under my name ‘Eli Emmitt’ that can be found on all platforms now.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The first quality I think is important is honoring your dream. You have a passion and a dream for a reason, and you are here to share your passion and gifts with the world. Cultivate your passions, and don’t let them fade. Don’t compare yourself to others, and realize that your uniqueness is your gift to the world.

Second is the knowledge I have gained from school, mentors, and professionals. I realized more and more as I got older that the lessons that come from experienced individuals are very valuable, and it is important to listen and not to assume anything. It is easy to be stubborn when you are young, but stay humble and learn from your elders. Stay curious, and stay excited to learn, because some of the most successful people were just like you: passionate and bright eyed young people ready to take the next steps.

The third that comes to mind is to learn the fundamentals. By learning the foundations and fundamentals of your craft you can then expand upon it, but if these elements are overlooked then you may find yourself filling too many gaps later. I also think it is important to constantly revisit these fundamentals in order to make sure that your foundation is solid and able to support your growth.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

My number 1 obstacle is navigating the music industry as a new artist on the scene. Booking shows, creating infrastructure for my business and building a fanbase in order to make a living with music is an exhausting process. The only way that I can resolve this obstacle is to keep moving forward and to keep building my musical business. This will also helped by building more community, gaining fanbase, and continuing to release new music. I realize that nothing worthwhile is realized quickly, therefore I am constantly reminding myself not to rush the process of growth with my craft.
