Meet Elias J.

We were lucky to catch up with Elias J. recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Elias , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I think most people are just prewired to behave in certain ways. There are actually some scientific studies that show this and it’s how we are able to develop tests that determine personality types. There are those among us that are just prewired to push the limits, to explore the unexplored and to dive into the unknown. I am one of these people. I feel fear and I am sometimes hesitant, but overall I cannot ignore the urge to go beyond and see how far I can go.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My artistic passion is for pyrography. I love the feel and smell and sounds of burning wood and creating pieces that others find perfect for themselves. Working with lasers and building things from scratch is a new part of my business and has been a very fun undertaking. I would really like to one day have a proper workshop and build custom furniture. What makes Treeish Things special is the goal to remain as carbon neutral as possible. Currently all the production is powered 90% by solar power. The goal is to start a renewable tree farm for local wood sourcing and continue to build using renewable energies.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

There are qualities that, in my opinion and the opinion of other successful entrepreneurs, are necessary for success. Amongst these are intention, commitment, and discipline. There is a lot that goes behind these words but for anyone just starting out, the best advice I can give is to be patient. Don’t be hasty. Trust the process and have faith that it will all work out.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Being overwhelmed is a state of mind. It occurs when we are overthinking the future tasks and seeing them all as one giant, never-ending, seemingly impossible task. They key is to plan and prioritize. There is something called the four quadrants of time management and it has proven to be a huge asset for all who use it appropriately. Break things down into smaller, more manageable steps and take them on one at a time and just keep going. We cant build a 500ft tower in a day but if we just keep laying bricks one by one, we will get there.
