Meet Elijah Hamm

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elijah Hamm. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Elijah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I initiated my business venture, Penguin Pups, at the tender age of 5. Recently turning 7 on March 12, I have grown accustomed to standing out as the youngest entrepreneur in all settings. Despite initial suspicion due to my age, I hold the distinction of being the youngest individual in the State of Colorado with my name associated with an LLC, and among the youngest globally.

At 5, I expressed interest in participating in “The Blox,” the largest startup show for adult entrepreneurs. My mom, recognizing my ambition, supported my application under the condition that I independently handle the process, with her guidance restricted to reading and writing assistance. If I could secure a spot on the show and present a compelling long-term business plan, she vowed to oversee my business until I’m ready to manage it myself. Originally met with skepticism regarding my ability to outshine tens of thousands of applicants, I defied expectations by, not only securing a place on the show, but also surpassing the performance of numerous adult participants.

Upon meeting me, individuals often find it surprising to learn that I am a business owner, and even more so, that I oversee my mother. Despite this, upon engaging with me, they acknowledge conversing with what seems like a precocious adult. Many people call me a tiny Albert Einstein. Driven by profound aspirations and a diligent work ethic, I remain resolute in turning my ambitious visions into tangible accomplishments.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
More than just a dog treat, Penguin Pups is a testament to the power of dreams and the beauty of compassion. My treats are a pampering delight for any canine companion, but they also serve a noble purpose. With every purchase, a portion of the proceeds is dedicated to feeding children in need. My long-term goal is to have a non-profit called “Elijah’s Bus”. My dream is to have a school bus in every city of every state in the United States that will deliver food to children in need 7 days a week. For every 10 seconds, a child in this world dies from hunger. One in every five children in the United States alone, goes to bed hungry each night. By choosing Penguin Pups, you become a part of the solution, making a positive impact on the world.

What’s more, Penguin Pups is now licensed by the Colorado Department of Agriculture Feed Program to sell treats nationally. You can rest assured knowing your best friend will only be receiving quality treats made from quality ingredients. I currently have 5 flavors of treats. Each one affectionately named after my favorite animal of all time, penguins! Each flavor of treat holds only one pure single ingredient and is put through a very specific dehydration process to ensure essential nutrients are preserved.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The key starting point is having a dream. I am living proof that a dream, even if it seems unattainable, can become a reality.

Next, courage is essential. I had to take a bold step and pursue something that seemed impossible to others. This requires a combination of prayer and self-assurance. Don’t let fear hold you back, and never allow anyone to discourage you. My mother has always instilled in me the belief that I can achieve anything I set my mind to – and so can you!

When I began, I had no knowledge of starting or managing a business, and neither did my mother, a teacher by profession. We relied on Google to guide us through the initial steps and still turn to it for answers. The learning process is ongoing; there is always room for growth. If possible, enroll in business courses to expand your knowledge. Alternatively, follow my example and participate in a TV show that condenses months of business learning into a week of filming.

Above all: persevere. Keep striving to realize your aspirations. When you love what you do, work feels like a passion. The destination is within reach – keep moving forward.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your mom and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mommy has always been my biggest supporter in all my dreams and passions. One significant passion of mine is aiding others, especially during Christmas. Since I was very young, I’ve fundraised to provide gifts for underprivileged children. This past Christmas was the most successful yet, as I managed to assist over 30 struggling families with gifts and holiday meals.

In 2022, a devastating fire, the Plumtaw fire, hit Pagosa Springs. I used my savings to purchase food and beverages for the firefighters who were protecting our town. Eager to do more, my mom encouraged me further by providing canvases and paint. I painted and sold my artwork, raising over $3,000 to support the first responders. With my mom’s unwavering support, driving me to deliver paintings and aiding in acquiring supplies for the firefighters and EMS, I was able to make a difference.

I owe my current position with Penguin Pups to my mother’s encouragement of all my dreams and passions
