We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elio Wallace a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Elio, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome took a lot of self affirmation. It was important that the affirmation came from me because the people around me would constantly remind me that I’m talented and meant to be a creative. It wouldn’t sink in because I didn’t truly believe it about myself. I had to believe in myself more than anyone else did to even put my creativity into gear. It was more than just believing I was meant to do this. It was a knowing
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a queer filmmaker and photographer. What I feel is special about what I do is, I get to share my unique perspective about life through an artistic lens. My goal is to start a topic of discussion through my art. As well as give people hope and a sense of belonging.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three areas of knowledge that I have learned are, surround yourself with people who know you best and want to see you become the best version of yourself, always be open to change, and do your craft to deepen your relationships with others and yourself. For people who are in their journey, surrounding yourself with the people who want to see you become at your best is a must. Sometimes we forget who we are or why we started doing this in the first place, these people will be there to pick you up right when you need it. Be open to change, weather that’s your surroundings, your style, whatever that means for you, it will deepen your pallet for creativity and connection. Lastly please do your art because YOU love to do it. Don’t second guess yourself, please just go for what YOU want. You have all of time to progress in your journey.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking for people to collaborate with! If you are a makeup artists, an actor, model, or have an expertise in sound or lighting I would love to connect with you. You can find me on instagram @eliosroom to see my work and contact me!
