Meet Elissa Jane Mastel

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elissa Jane Mastel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Elissa Jane, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Understanding that the itty bitty sh$%&tty committee in your head is not real. Limiting beliefs are instilled in us at such a young age by those who give us painful feedback. Whether you heard it from bad teachers, parents, childhood friends, or the media, we’ve all experienced hearing things that hurt.

Here is how I overcame this idea of imposter syndrome:

1. Self Love Practice. In Buddhism, there is a term called Metta, which is the pali word for Loving Kindness. It is easy to close your eyes and think of your child, best friend, your dog, and offer unwavering loving kindness to them. But what about strangers? What about people you have challenges with? What about yourself? When you practice the offering of Loving Kindness daily to yourself and to others, you can change the script of self judgment that perpetuates in your head. For years, I practiced saying kind things to myself every time I had thoughts of inadequacy racing through my head. You can start with very simple phrases you tell yourself daily, such as:

I deserve to be happy.
I deserve to be at ease.
I deserve success.
I deserve abundance.
I belong in any space I walk in.

By reminding myself of these truths regularly, I am able to flip the script on how I talk to myself and be kinder to myself.

2. Let Go! Make a list of limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Be sure to be thorough. Once you write them all down, you can reflect on how none of these are true. You can do a letting go ceremony where you burn that list in a fire, or rip it up into tiny pieces, or flush it down the toilet. Do what you need to do to identify these limiting beliefs and let them go.

3. Affirmations, move your mind into a positive mindset. You can work with a list of affirmations, or focus on one for an extended period of time. Sometimes it is a fake it til you make it thing. When you tell yourself you’re awesome, you will begin to believe it with every fiber of your being. It takes practice to believe these positive things can be true for you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an entrepreneur and a teacher. There are two businesses I’m running right now with a third on the way.

My boutique marketing agency, ConvertGo Marketing (formerly chillMedia NORTH) has been around since 2006. We went through an overhaul of our business model and branding in 2020. As a seasoned marketer who has come up in the digital age, I have my finger on the pulse of what works and how to position companies for success. Our team comes up with marketing strategy, branding, graphic design, websites, social media marketing, and more for our clients. We specialize in building community, and connecting founders with an audience.

What makes ConvertGo Marketing so special is that we have highly seasoned people on our team who love to work together to get results. All of our clients are our priority, and relationship building is such a key ingredient to our culture.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I adore Danielle LaPorte’s book, “The Desire Map”

In this book, she talks about manifesting your goals by focusing on how it feels to achieve them. Having a mindset around your well-being, and how you feel when you reach a goal can really enhance outcomes. The Desire Map has helped me to reenvision goals through the lens of how I’m going to feel when I reach that goal, putting my heart first rather than a checkbox. There’s a workbook that you can get with it as well.

It’s an awesome book, every entrepreneur should read it!
