Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eliza Vezina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Eliza, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I’ve discovered that when my creative well runs dry, or I’m struggling to find a starting point for a project, simply paying attention to my surroundings can be incredibly helpful. Interior design, in its multitude of forms, is everywhere we look. It’s fascinating how even outwardly identical buildings can conceal vastly different interior worlds, each reflecting the unique personalities of the people who inhabit them. Whether I’m browsing in a bookstore, grabbing coffee at my local café, or simply walking down the street, I make a conscious effort to observe the spaces around me, gleaning inspiration from the design choices made. Memories of my travels also serve as a rich source of ideas. I often recall specific details from the environments I’ve encountered in different places and cultures, incorporating elements of those experiences into my own work. One of the things I truly appreciate about interior design is its inherent capacity to express individuality. While a designer’s personal style will undoubtedly influence their work, a truly successful design often incorporates multiple layers of meaning and visual interest. This multi-faceted approach is what keeps the creative spark alive for me. I remind myself that inspiration isn’t some elusive, far-off thing; it’s all around us, readily available to anyone who takes the time to observe and appreciate the world around them.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My passion for interior design, and architecture, fuels my aspiration to make a real difference in the world through the spaces I create. What truly captivates me about this field is the opportunity it provides to help individuals express their unique identities through their homes. It’s about more than just aesthetics; it’s about collaborating with families to bring their dream homes to life, creating spaces where they feel truly comfortable and at ease. Many people harbor a vision of their ideal home, a place that embodies their personal style and caters to their specific needs, and I find immense satisfaction in turning those visions into tangible realities. Interior design is so much more than simply selecting paint colors or coordinating furniture. It’s about crafting environments that foster a sense of belonging, a sanctuary where people feel safe, nurtured, and proud to reside. It’s about understanding the profound impact a well-designed space can have on someone’s life. While a house provides shelter, a thoughtfully designed home has the power to transform lives, creating a backdrop for cherished memories and enhancing the overall quality of life for those who dwell within its walls. It’s this ability to create not just houses, but truly transformative homes, that drives my passion for interior design.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As a sophomore in interior design, I’ve learned the importance of trusting the design process and believing in my abilities. Projects can be challenging and stressful, but persistence is key. I’ve found that continued effort usually leads to the desired outcome. This reinforces the idea that creative endeavors often require patience and a belief in the unfolding process. Collaboration is another crucial skill. Interior design more often than not, involve working closely with a diverse team of professionals, from architects and contractors to other designers and specialists. Requiring strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively is essential when interacting with clients, presenting design concepts, and translating their needs and desires into tangible spaces. Clear and concise communication ensures that everyone involved is on the same page, minimizing misunderstandings and fostering a productive working relationship. Finally problem-solving is essential. It’s the designer’s responsibility to address these issues head-on, finding creative and effective solutions without unduly burdening the client. This proactive approach to problem-solving is crucial for delivering successful projects and maintaining client confidence. Furthermore, the ability to receive and incorporate constructive criticism is invaluable. Client feedback, even when it requires revisions or changes to a design, is an essential part of the design process. Learning to view feedback as an opportunity for improvement, rather than a personal critique, allows for growth as a designer and ultimately leads to better outcomes for clients.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Looking back, I realize the most significant thing my parents have done for me is simply be my parents, in the truest sense of the word. Their support has been a constant presence in my life; they’ve never wavered in their commitment to me, always offering a helping hand when I’ve struggled and never once giving up on me, even during times of self-doubt. Choosing a creative career path, particularly in a field like design, isn’t always easy. There are often voices, both internal and external, that question the viability of such a pursuit. But my parents have never been among those voices. They’ve consistently believed in my potential, even when I’ve struggled to believe in myself. I know that whenever I’m facing a difficult time, whether it’s a creative block or a personal setback, my parents are the first people I turn to. They are always there, ready to listen, offer advice, and provide the reassurance I need to keep going. This unwavering support, this constant presence in my life, has been instrumental in shaping my self-confidence. It’s allowed me to develop a deep trust in my own abilities, to believe in the power of my creative vision, and to approach my design work with a sense of conviction. Knowing that I have their unwavering support has given me the courage to take risks, push boundaries, and pursue my passion with unwavering determination.
