Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth Covington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Elizabeth, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
This is actually something I have struggled with my whole life. I feel like we all struggle with self esteem, especially when we have society and different influencers telling us how we should be. Growing up I always wanted to be different and I struggled for years on finding my purpose.
When I graduated high school I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I felt like I was a failure. I actually considered taking up photography 10 years before I actually started, but I let others opinion of me stand in my way. I want my daughter to know that she can choose whatever she wants to do and not let opinions of others stop her from what she wants to do. It’s something I still struggle with I’m not gonna lie. I am a people pleaser and I don’t like to admit it. I can be a pretty sensitive person. In this career field it can be pretty hard to not start to second guess yourself or struggle with imposter syndrome when it’s such a saturated field and it seems like a new photographer is popping up every day. In my area alone there are well over 100. I just try to remind myself that every one is different and it’s also about connecting with them versus just putting out gorgeous work. People want to feel like they are your friends and not just a client.
I take pride in my work and my customer service, I’m also super bubbly so I feel like that’s what sets me apart. So I would say that leaning in to what makes you special instead of how you’re different really helps with confidence and self esteem.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve been a professional photographer for almost 3 years and I haven’t really focused on a specific thing yet. I love doing elopements, in home lifestyle newborns and families, but I also really love maternity sessions. I am hoping to add Luxury Maternity sessions sometime in the future that will include my client closet and hair and makeup. If I had to choose right at this second I would have to say I would like to specialize in maternity. There’s just something so beautiful about women who are expecting, definitely a glow!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
100% first thing is to learn how to properly compose an image. Proper ISO, aperture, and shutter speed are essential. If you don’t know what those are, look them up. Take some online classes, there are tons online and they are free. It will be very beneficial to you.
Second, you need to figure out what makes you unique and run with it.
Third, find a photographer who will let you shadow them, even if you’re not actually taking your camera. Same with weddings, go as an assistant and as you start taking good consistent work look into second shooting before taking on one on your own.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
Honestly we should always be trying to learn and improve. No matter how long you’re in the business there’s always going to be things to improve on. I would say in the beginning for sure focus on your strengths.
