We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Dowell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Elizabeth , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
As a first-generation American, I learned about hard work from my parents. The year I was born, my father acquired the business he had been working for, and my mother joined him. They poured their time and energy into the business to make it successful. I am inspired by my father’s journey and resilience, showing me that achieving your goals is possible. Growing up, my father faced the challenges of living through the civil war in El Salvador that lasted for 12 years, where every day was uncertain. Despite the hardships and tragedies, my father had the determination to strive for more and not let the past dictate his future. This determination led him to move to the U.S., as it was a matter of life or death due to the mandatory recruitment of male children into the armed forces in El Salvador. He completed his education in the U.S. and started working in house maintenance for a company, which he later took over and successfully expanded over the past 25 years. Witnessing my father’s journey has been truly transformative and motivational for me. Seeing his successes and learning from his mistakes has shown me that with dedication and passion, great achievements are possible. Growing up in Burbank, CA, provided me with endless opportunities to pursue my passions without any excuses. In 2022, after working as a Licensed Esthetician for six years, I took the leap to become a solo entrepreneur and launch my business, “Ethereal Hand Esthetics”. My goal is to create a sanctuary where clients can find inner peace and rejuvenation, inspiring me to deliver the best service possible. As I take this leap of faith into the world of entrepreneurship, I carry with me the values of hard work, dedication, and a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of pursuing one’s passions. Just as my father’s journey has inspired me, I hope to inspire others to chase their dreams fearlessly and embrace the endless possibilities that await them.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My journey started immediately in high school when I discovered my love and drive for makeup and skincare. Less then 2 months after graduating high school, I started Esthetician school at Paul Mitchell in Pasadena. After graduating early, I dedicated some time to discover services I wanted to learn and take on. Shortly after getting my license I took my first course in lash extensions and was shorty hired at a busy salon where I performed facials, makeup application, lash extensions, waxing, and took on a social media role. As much as I enjoyed the growth and experience I started to feel overwhelmed and decided to look for new opportunities to learn and grow as an esthetician doing a new skill. I was lucky enough to work for a former UFC fighter performing both Sculpting facials and body contouring. I fell in love with the human body, health and wellness. I eventually worked with and became certified in 7 different body sculpting machines, including Winback Therapy, Cryo Skin, Cavitation, Zemits, Emsculpt, European RF, and Ultraslim. I do not perform body sculpting anymore as it is not in my scope but I do take all the knowledge and incorporate it into my facials today and specialize in facial Lymphatic massage and sculpting massage. As a Holistic Esthetician I consider the body as a whole to address the root causes of skin conditions. Focusing on the genuine connection between skin and body. I’m thrilled to be working with clean, non-toxic line, that have products that are also oncology-safe. I am deeply passionate about brands that prioritize inclusivity. I will stand with my brand when I say as a holistic esthetician I believe our skin is the window to what goes on internally. Our skin is quite amazing at communicating with us by physically showing us the root problem.
The Inspiration Behind Ethereal Hand Esthetics: Many people ask me, “What made you choose a career in esthetics?” The answer is simple: You did.
I was inspired by people like you to pursue a path that I’m passionate about. From the moment I applied makeup on someone for the first time and saw their reaction to my work, I knew I had found my calling. The joy and peace they felt was a defining moment for me. Although I don’t do makeup professionally it was the start of my journey and holds a special place in my heart. I want my energy and the atmosphere of my workspace to be warm and welcoming. I strive to create an environment of comfort and tranquility for you to experience full relaxation through my ethereal hands. The name “Ethereal Hand Esthetics” is a reflection of my heartfelt approach of my work. Despite my initial self-consciousness about my very small hands, I discovered that they were a gift; they fit perfectly on everyone’s face, creating a magical sense of tranquility. My gentle “Ethereal” hands guide you to a deep state of relaxation, resulting in an ethereal experience.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most qualities for a successful journey in Esthetics are patience, education, and enjoying the process. Here’s why they matter:
Patience is key as we all progress at our own pace. It’s important to be patient with ourselves and the path we are on. Trust the process and avoid blaming yourself for your current situation.
Education plays a vital role, especially in fields like esthetics where things are constantly changing. Taking courses, even those you are slightly interested in, is a great way to expand your knowledge.
Lastly, have fun with it! When you genuinely enjoy what you do, everything falls into place effortlessly. Enjoy creating your space, providing services, generating content, and expressing your true self. Having fun and staying happy can turn work into something you love.
The most valuable advice for those considering their own business or venturing into the field of Esthetics is to create something unique and lead by example. While it’s easy to be influenced by others what truly distinguishes you is being a leader and approaching tasks with a unique perspective. Stand out by doing something different, turning it into your brand, and making it all about you. By doing so, you will attract the right people and clientele that genuinely have an interest in you.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal clientele is of all age groups; they appreciate the whimsical ambiance of my space filled with my moody estate sale finds, crystals & plants, the fresh custom blend of essential oils I diffused. They value clean, non-toxic products that are both effective and prioritize the connection between skin and body. They understand the significance of self-care and being attuned to oneself, ready to embrace moments of tranquility and bliss in the present.
