Meet Elizabeth (Lizzy) Kearns

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Elizabeth (Lizzy) Kearns. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Elizabeth (Lizzy) , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

Ever since I was young, I’ve had a knack for communicating. I think it comes from being naturally curious and empathetic. For me, being a good communicator starts with being a good listener. In any situation, I try to listen first. If I can really hear and understand what you’re saying, I can respond in a way that truly addresses your needs or what you want to convey.
I move through the world with compassion, often switching up my communication style based on who I’m talking to and what they need. This habit probably started when I was a kid. As the oldest of three sisters, I was always mediating, trying to make sure everyone understood each other. It taught me how to help people feel heard and understood, which I carry with me today. This is likely why I switched from a biology major as an undergrad to a communication major focusing on media and society. I am now pursuing my MBA and an MA in Media Communication from Webster University. I am a forever student and will (hopefully) always be curious about how we communicate.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My journey is all about blending creativity with communication. I’m now diving deep into media and branding, working as a Media and Brand Consultant for a local artist (Rachel Deshaine). It’s an exciting role where I use my video editing, social media, and photography skills to bring artistic visions to life. I joke with my friends and colleagues that I like to be a “jack of all trades.” I stay busy using various mediums for content creation, dabbling in photography, audio composition, graphic design and collaborating with other creatives. Most of my work is freelance and consulting, allowing me to explore different projects and ideas.
What I find most special about my work is the opportunity to tell compelling stories. Whether through a perfectly edited video or a well-crafted social media campaign, I love finding ways to connect with people and make an impact. Every project is a new adventure, and seeing the positive reactions from clients and their audiences is incredibly rewarding. Balancing work and studies for my MBA and MA in Media Communication keeps me on my toes and constantly learning. I hope to apply the technicalities of my research to my creative endeavors and set myself apart as a creative director. I’m all about innovation and finding fresh, engaging ways to communicate. Watch for exciting projects and collaborations soon – I can’t wait to share what’s next! Here is my website if you would like to stay in the know www.elizabethlkearns.com

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The first three things that come to mind are perseverance, curiosity, and service.
Perseverance is crucial. There will always be roadblock and challenges, but pushing through and staying committed to my goals has made all the difference. However, knowing when to step back and reevaluate is also important. Sometimes, pausing to reassess your path can provide clarity and renewed energy. My advice for those early in their journey is to stay focused and keep going, but don’t be afraid to take breaks and adjust your approach when necessary. Success often comes to those who don’t give up and know when to recharge.
Curiosity fuels my passion for learning and growth. It drives me to explore new mediums, experiment with different techniques, and continuously improve my skills. To develop this quality, I always ask questions, seek new experiences, and never stop learning. I love to ask “Why” or “What If”. I embrace the unknown and am open to discovering new interests and talents.
Finally, a sense of service has guided my personal growth and projects. Whether it’s helping a client achieve their vision or contributing to my community, serving others has been incredibly rewarding. For those starting out, focus on how your work or actions impact others. Find ways to contribute, give back, listen to feedback, and be willing to lend a hand. This mindset enriches your work, fosters meaningful relationships, and opens doors to new opportunities.
Developing these qualities will help you navigate challenges and enhance your personal and professional growth. Stay perseverant, stay curious, and always look for ways to serve and uplift others.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

I LOVE reading and learning more about the creative process and communication research. Right now, the book Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg has made the most significant shift in how I understand and approach communication. This book has been transformative in my development, offering profound insights into how we can communicate more effectively and empathetically.
One of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom from Rosenberg’s book is the importance of expressing our needs and feelings without blame or judgment. By focusing on our own experiences and avoiding criticism, we create a space for open and honest dialogue. This approach improves our relationships and helps us resolve conflicts more peacefully.
Another impactful concept from Nonviolent Communication is the practice of active listening. Rosenberg emphasizes the need to truly hear and understand the other person’s perspective before responding. This aligns perfectly with my belief in the power of listening and has further reinforced my commitment to being a compassionate and attentive communicator.
Lastly, the book teaches the importance of empathy in our interactions. By striving to connect with others on an emotional level and acknowledging their feelings, we foster more profound and more meaningful connections. This has been incredibly valuable in my personal and professional life, helping me build stronger relationships and collaborate more effectively.
Integrating the principles of Nonviolent Communication into my daily life enhances my ability to communicate with empathy and clarity. It’s a must-read for anyone looking to improve communication skills and build more harmonious relationships.
