We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elizabeth Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elizabeth , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Success comes when you embrace your uniqueness. When you understand the value you bring by being the only one that can do it the way you do it. It took me a long time to come to a place where I enjoyed being different. It’s easy to just simply conform, but I learned that was just pushing down desires and gifts I was meant to share with others. Most importantly I learned that conforming meant that I was lying to myself.
The number one way that I have become successful at what I do is by embracing the truth of my uniqueness. Which meant I first had to figure out exactly what that was. We all grow up having others’ ideas, opinions, and expectations impressed upon us of how we ought to behave. But what if the very thing that is the key to our success is what makes us different? I spent time on self-development to first undo the conditioning of beliefs I had established about myself. These beliefs dated back all the way to childhood. You owe it to yourself to take stock in what ideas you have that could be holding you back. So as I learned Reiki and Spiritual life coaching, I applied what I was learning to myself. For example, shadow work is a wonderful way to structurally challenge your beliefs. Shadow work is working with your unconscious mind to uncover what you hide or repress. Shadow work may look like this: Write down a fear/s that holds you back in your daily life. How does this fear serve you, if at all? It’s about being curious of what makes you behave the way you do, and if you discover things that don’t work, you have the ability to adopt new philosophies. This self-development helped me undo what lies I had bought into from my life. No wonder things weren’t working in the beginning. I wasn’t working from a place that was in alignment with me. I was conforming.
The second way was tapping into the energy of my confidence. As an energy worker I knew that I had to begin working in my Solar Plexus chakra. Chakras are wheels of energy that go up the spine. The Solar Plexus chakra is the seat of our confidence and will power. It’s this energy center where we feel in control of our lives. As I was doing Reiki on myself, I realized that by conforming to others ideals that I was giving my power away. So the way that I took my power back was allowing myself to follow my ideology. I said yes to following my ideas of what I should do with my life and how my business should look. Your desire to follow your need of fulfillment has to be stronger than your fears of what others think of you. My grandfather always told me, “Elizabeth you’ll never have anything if you worry about what others think of you.” He was right. When I first began my business I didn’t have anything because I was too afraid of what others’ would say or think. The more I followed my ideas the easier it became. It felt good. If I didn’t understand something I would learn about it so I could make informed decisions. This is why being different can help you to learn more things than those around you, and this gained self-knowledge develops unshakable confidence. This confidence helped me tap into that driving force to obtain my goals. When you have haters and nay-sayers around, you can tap into this confidence and find the motivation to move on anyway.
Over time doing the work on myself and gaining knowledge of my gifts, truth, and how to heal myself made me an expert in what I do. To some, doing Reiki energy work and spiritual coaching is strange. It’s woo woo stuff that pushes some people’s comfort level. I had lots of people not support me or make fun of what I do. But if you can discover your truth of who you are and find confidence in that, it won’t matter what someone else says. Connecting to your truth helps you discover your “why”. Your “why” is everything. It is that driving force within you.
I had to become curious about my business, meaning if I tried something and it didn’t work I learned from the mistake and would try again. Once I embraced being different, I no longer had the desire to compare myself to others. There is nothing to compare it to. No one else looked like me in my line of work. Plus, comparison only kills motivation. I also had to stop listening to others’ opinions. Most definitely had to look at opinions as just that. They are opinions, not facts. Lastly, It is good to be prepared and have a plan, but always be flexible and receptive to changes. I learned over time that being different is a superpower and not a curse. When you begin to respect and value what you do, others will too.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am Elizabeth Powell and I am a Karuna Holy Fire Reiki Master, Spiritual teacher, and spiritual life coach. I help empower people through helping to meet their spiritual needs and rediscovering who they truly are. I do this through a number of different healing modalities. What excites me the most is when clients experience freedom and liberation from the heavy negative things they carry. For the past few months I have been working with a business coach to help me expand my services and develop my first online coaching program.
My online coaching program “A Journey to the Self” is a 6 week immersive program that includes bi-weekly 90 minute coaching calls with me and online self-paced modules. This program helps empaths, light workers, healers, or those that have had spiritual awakenings to understand what spiritual needs are not being met, shed things that are no longer working, and harness their personal power.

I absolutely love teaching Reiki. I offer in person classes as well as 1:1 Zoom classes. If you are interested in learning Reiki to help others or just for yourself, you can learn how to do Reiki all the way up to the Karuna Holy Fire Reiki Master level. These are immersive 2 and 3 day classes where you learn all you need to know about Reiki and administering Reiki to others. As a teacher I am associated with the International Center for Reiki Training so after completion of class you will be able to register with the center. I offer discount packages for services and payment plan options for classes.
This expansion for my business is exciting for me because I wanted to offer a variety of services to clients to help with their different needs. For me personally, this growth and expansion has helped me to discover my value and inner personal power. By applying what I have learned from Reiki training and spiritual life coaching, it has helped me connect deeper to my clients because I have been where they have been. Having a mentor to help you through spiritual changes in life can make it seem less overwhelming and the relief of feeling heard.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first quality that I have is always being a student. I’m always researching and learning. Then I apply what I learn to myself and then to my clients. Again, researching and learning about things that interest you adds to your expertise. It shows you have a passion for what you do. Soon, you will have people coming to you because that energy vibrates off you. That energy of knowledge and passion.
The second quality is empathy. When you apply what you learn to you personally, then you are able to connect to your clients in deeper ways, even without words or just meeting new clients. You’ve been where they are and are able to better connect to their needs.
Lastly, learning and becoming a certified Reiki Master has been life changing, personally and business wise. It has opened up an opportunity for me to fulfill my life purpose and help others. It has also allowed me to grow a business that’s helped me to be able to leave a full time job to dedicate my life to serving others. Now I am dedicated to teaching other Reiki.
If you are early on your journey with your business the best advice I can give you is to go easy on yourself. I had a hard time with this in the beginning. I felt like I had to push myself to get quick results in my business. This did nothing but burn me out and rob me of the joy of growing a business. I learned I would much rather have slower lasting growth than quick fleeting growth. To help me with slowing down, was adopting an experimental mindset with my business. If I tried something new and it didn’t work I wouldn’t fixate on it. Instead I would do market research to figure out how to change it and adapt or throw it out.
The other advice I would give is to keep your eye on the bigger picture. We can get caught up in the small things and fixate on small losses. When in the grand scheme of things you are succeeding in other ways that matter. When I left my job to pursue my business full time I actually had a lot of clients fall off due to the economy & their personal finances. I freaked out because this was my livelihood. However, I had also implemented other streams of passive income like selling crystals and online educational courses. At the end of that year I had actually doubled my income for that year. Yes it is possible to experience losses and growth simultaneously.
